The Terminal List

Jack Carr

Great read.

An excellent thriller. Carr is a very good writer in all respects. I'm afraid that his strong right wing bias came through in several places. I can't judge since the bad guy in my WIP is an ultra conservative Texas Sheriff.

Navy Seal Lt. Commander James Reece loses his entire team in a mission that did not read right from the beginning. When he returns stateside, he discovers he has a tumor in his brain, the same as many members of his dead squad. This puts Reece on a mission to find out why his men died and how they all contracted the tumors.

5.5/10 - (reminder a 5 for me is "I can't tell if I liked the book or not", so this is slightly on the "liked" side). Didn't love it, probably doesn't help that action thrillers in general just isn't my favorite genre. I'm glad this got me outside of my normal bubble tho because I need to branch out and I liked this more than I thought I would. Plot and pacing were great, never got boring and was mostly thrilling from start to finish. The final 30 pages were so good and I liked that it ended on a twist that I didn't see coming at all (buddy Ben knowing Reece would go on this lethal revenge tour and basically using him to take out a bunch of the dudes who were in on the whole deal and became liabilities to them). And the reveal at the very end on his voicemail about the tumor being mostly benign was a great segway into future books. Some of the descriptions were a bit technical and heavy for me on a lot of the gear, weapons, equipment, etc. Almost so in depth that I was distracted by it at times, but I can appreciate the detail from an author who clearly knows his stuff. Hartleys felt very much a comparison to the Clintons IMO.

4.5 stars, rounded up.

Great review by Jeffrey D. Keaton "Prepared to be thrilled, enlightened, and proud of our men in uniform. Politics should never be about them, but unfortunately, too many times they have been the pawns in the naked ambitions of others." "Having agreed to read this book on the recommendation of a friend, I was unsure what to expect from Jack Carr... While I have an eclectic taste when it comes to books, I thoroughly enjoy novels that are well-written and filled with detail. Jack Carr uses much of his military background to develop a story that is both believable and full of nuances that allows the reader to feel in the middle of the action." Great thriller. Not normally a thriller person, but I was totally engrossed in the story. Great pacing, great characters.

Knocking off a star because the SecDef's character was clearly modeled after Hillary Clinton, and by that, I mean changed her name and job role. We get it, you don't like her. That's fine, but it seems like such a lazy thing to do as an author.

Well, the author is def a fan of the pew pews, the sheer volume of detail about military weaponry was both tiring and vaguely enjoyable. Maybe I even learned something. Sort of like reading the DaVinci Code & suddenly feeling like you know a lot about religion. And maybe art.
In any case, this went like the Punisher + Jack Reacher + Enemy of the State. Lucky for me, I love formulaic suspense novels with a lot of ass kickin’. I would read the rest of them maybe.

2 reasons why it's bad

I should have stopped reading after the first chapter but was interested in how this book basically praises American hegemony. The writing is a bad attempt at being Lee Child like so honestly if you read this review, I wouldn't bother with this author but if you're an American idiot wannabe you'll probably love it.

Audiobook narrator was great, some of he military strategy lost me but the audiobook made that easier to follow. Lingering questions about a couple of characters, curious what happens in the rest of the series!
