While it has a lot of the same charms as the first two books in this trilogy, this book is hindered by the central romance which did not work for me at all.

I’m sorry, but I could not get over the age difference between the leads. It’s made worse by the back bending done by Lackey to make it not seem icky. Oh the magical angel horse says it’s fine, they’re soul mates, Stef is actually really mature for his age - it all feels so labored and full of excuses. Because of this weakness at the center some of the other issues (like weird pacing) felt more egregious. I didn’t LOVE the other books but was still disappointed in this conclusion.

I really liked this book, exclusively because I think it's funny when authors write themselves into corners and then have to get out of them, which unfortunately happens several times in this book.

How can reading the actual author's work feel so much like bad fanfiction? It really feels like Lackey realized she had set nothing up for what existed in the previous book and had a mad dash to the end. Some of the most baffling decisions are made. Not worth anyone's time beyond completion of a story you already know the end to if you've read the previous books.

A few years ago, a friend of mine spoiled the ending, called it depressing, and I never got to finish the book until now. I wouldn't call the ending depressing. I would call it exactly what the book needed.

3 stars-

Really conflicted feelings here. This series has very high highs and LOW lows. The world building and character work were compelling, but the pacing and plot contrivances were agitating. So I settled on 3 stars. Fun if you turn your brain off, but gets worse on any in depth reflection.
