Work sucks and reading about nothing else is boring. Maybe it was so depressing because it was relatable. 1.5 stars rounded up to 2 because of the hilarious and accurate read of the word “utilize.”
I thought this was so unique-I would probably hate reading things like this all the time but I really enjoyed having it in my rotation. Made up of prose more than plot or dialogue but she was able to capture some really visceral images with her writing! honestly loved this

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but this book is like a glimpse inside an ADHD brain and that's just not going to be for everyone. The rushing thoughts, the topic switching with no discernible segue, the wild swinging between 'everything is fine' to castrophising - it's got all the hits.
If you or a close loved one has ADHD, it's likely going to be a relatable brain pattern, which is nice to see in a main character, particularly when it's not positioned as a "charming, personality quirk".
For me, it was an interesting read, but I felt the premise was let down somewhat by not having any real story arc.

I was deeply moved and riveted by this character's internal dramas and organic voice.
An unlikeable narrator and no plot is my kind of book. I flew through this and enjoyed the commentary on the mundanity of life and one's everyday struggles. We are all Millie's, Sarah's, and Karen's at some point in our lives.
I kept trying to coax myself into liking this novel. And there were funny parts or sections I found compelling. But mostly, I kept thinking to myself, "Why am I finishing this novel?"
What I can say about this book is that it positions the reader to contemplate anxiety and depression from a different angle. I would almost say that Butler's work could build a reader's capacity to empathize with someone who is struggling with mental health.
But I would also say that it sometimes felt circuitous in a way that felt...slippery. And not slippery in a way that could emulate a person's experience of anxiety or depression, though I tried to attribute the novel's tone and structure to such a purpose. By slippery, I mean fast and loose in all directions and at all times. Providing more focus could have fostered a deeper sense of connection to the character while considering the role mental health plays, particularly in a workplace society.
