The New Me

So American, so bleh. Genuinely really bleak and depressing with no redeeming features . I’m aware it’s meant to be almost satire but not once did I crack a smile

Life is relentless

At first I didn’t even know it was over...

I thought this was really well done - Millie is a 20-something temp at a design firm in Chicago who isn't succeeding in making the transition to adulthood. Most of the novel is from her point of view, but there are occasional chapters from others' perspectives that make it painfully obvious how disconnected Millie's view of herself is from how others see her.

I liked this but wasn’t wowed. Parts of it were disturbingly relatable (like when Millie went for a run for the first time in forever and felt like passing out after one mile, the lists the characters make of ways to improve their lives, anxiety about the future, etc) and other parts just pissed me off, specifically her inability to shred documents at her temp job. Overall though I think this book perfectly captured the self destructive tendencies of a depressed brain and the cycles of capitalism/self improvement that a lot of Americans specifically get caught up in.

Wouldn’t recommend reading this if you’re in a depressive state or feel like you’re in a slump though, could be kinda triggering

Loved the idea of this novel, but thought it would go in a different direction. Yes, it’s funny but also really sad and depressing, especially considering the end- but I guess that’s the point.

This was quite good. I was quite confused and unsure at the beginning but once I figured out how the perspectives works I was like yeah this is good.

These women and the void books are often just a stream of consciousness from the protagonist so it was really interesting and polarizing to get snippets of the experiences around her. Particularly to show how delusional she was. It was quite sad near the end but I appreciated when her parents stepped in and that it the final chapter was cutesy! Yay! Good read!
