Its a good story, but I guessed the ending in the first chapter.
this is one of those books i still can't decide if I liked that much. interesting, skimmed most of it. Got to the end, and finished it off.
Interesting. ..might have to revisit.

Was not 100% sure, but pretty convinced of the "twist" for most of the book.
Good read, but not the best thing I've read by a long shot.

I read this book a while ago, but I will never forget it. I actually gasped out loud when I got to the ending. A very haunting book.
Initially, the narrator’s voice irritated me. After trudging through it for a few chapters I learned that the narrator was actually an 8-year-old girl living in the South with a poor upbringing, a mentally vacant mother, and an abusive step-father . The language and diction made sense after that. I thought I had the ending figured out, but Flock turns the plot around and throws the reader through a loop towards the end. If it wasn’t the unexpected ending, I probably wouldn’t have been as impressed with this piece as I am.
I just finished this book after gobbling it up within 24 hours. This could have been very same-y in the Southern lit category what with it being about impoverished little girls living with a physically and emotionally abusive stepfather; however, the characters themselves and a twist on the Southern abuse storyline saves this book from that fate. Instead it is fresh and interesting and just pretty much unputdownable.
I'm not entirely sure how I felt about this book. There were times I couldn't put it down, and others that I could barely get through a few pages at a time. Overall, I liked Carrie's voice throughout the book, and was satisfied with the plot.
So you mean I just invested so much feeling into this to have the rug swept from under me? Are you kidding with that ending? REALLY? This will break your heart and piss you off at the same time.
While this book was hard to read (subject-matter wise), it was really good. I think the language and behaviors of the children were done well, as were the the adult characters. While the climax was expected, I really didn't see the resolution coming - it was like a second, smaller climax. Perhaps that revelation was really even bigger (and maybe the true climax?) than the big action moment.
