This was a creepy and suspenseful novel. It is a tough read due to the bulk of the story dealing with horrific domestic abuse and how the characters cope. In my work as a counselor I've seen so many similar cases and this book read true to life while at the same time lacking any of the real-life interventions one might expect to see (teachers or neighbors reporting abuse to DHHS, for example). I wonder if readers who are not in the mental health/social work field would have that same sense of anger as they are reading - not just at the "bad guys" in the story but at the systems that fail them. From what I've read of other reviews, most folks did feel like the situation was "hopeless." The plot twist at the end was a long time coming but at the same time I must give credit to the author for subtlety; there are clues within the story as to what was happening but as a reader you keep being drawn forward and past them, just as the characters must keep pushing forward to simply make it through their days. Heartbreaking and likely not for everyone.
I don't remember a lot about this book other than the twist at the end!
An abusive childhood from a little girls point of view....some twists and turns, a little disturbing, but very good....
This book was interesting. I was disappointed with the ending. There was a lot of foreshadowing that led to it, but it still didn't sit well with me. The character development was really good and the storyline was interesting.
Well this book wasn't awful. It always had you on the edge of your seat. But the ending!! Holy cow!!! The ending blew me away!!! I'm still in shock!!
This did not turn out like I thought it would. Definitely a dark story.
Could not put this book down. What a heart-wrenching page turner.
I really enjoyed this book, picked it up on a whim at a local thrift store. It is in the Oprah-bookclub-dysfunctional-family vein, but worth reading to the end.
