emotional sad tense

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about The Women, since books that blow up on TikTok aren’t usually my favorite and I’d heard mixed things about Kristin Hannah’s writing. But I ended up really liking it. The protagonist, Frankie, felt relatable yet unique enough to keep me intrigued, and I appreciated how her character shifted from naivety to experience to being jarred by all she went through. At times it felt like catastrophe after catastrophe, and watching her spiral was heavy, but it made the story that much more compelling. I also loved how much I learned about the Vietnam War and American culture at the time—one of my favorite things about historical fiction. The ending wasn’t what I thought I wanted as I was reading, but ultimately I was happy with where it landed. Overall, this book surprised me in the best way and stuck with me more than I expected.

This book is incredible. Hannah masterfully navigates the brutality of the Vietnam War without being so brutal that you have to quit reading.
The tragedies and joys of combat hospitals draws the reader into the story of Frankie and her friends.
There is love, loss, grief, struggle, and hope.

This is the best book I’ve read in a while.
