"A Master of Djinn" is a captivating and well-crafted novel by P. Djèlí Clark that seamlessly blends steampunk, fantasy, and detective genres in a unique and refreshing way. Set in an alternate version of Cairo in the early 20th century, the story follows the adventures of Fatma el-Sha'arawi, a skilled agent of the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, and Supernatural Entities.
The plot centers around a series of murders and a dangerous conspiracy that threaten to disrupt the fragile peace between humans and supernatural beings, including djinns and other mythical creatures. Fatma, together with her new partner, the charming and enigmatic Hadia, must navigate the complex political landscape of colonial Egypt and confront powerful enemies while uncovering the truth behind the killings.
What makes "A Master of Djinn" stand out is its vivid and intricate world-building, which draws on a rich tapestry of historical, cultural, and mythological references to create a fully realized and immersive setting. The author's prose is elegant and evocative, transporting the reader to a world that is both familiar and strange, filled with wonder and danger.
Another strength of the book is its diverse and well-rounded cast of characters, who defy stereotypes and challenge the reader's expectations. Fatma, in particular, is a compelling protagonist, who struggles with her identity as a woman in a male-dominated society, as well as her own prejudices and biases towards supernatural beings. Her relationship with Hadia is also a highlight of the book, as it develops from mistrust and rivalry to mutual respect and affection.
Overall, "A Master of Djinn" is a thrilling and thought-provoking novel that offers a fresh perspective on the steampunk and fantasy genres. It is a must-read for fans of P. Djèlí Clark's previous works, as well as anyone who enjoys complex and engaging storytelling.

I admit, I was the kid who was OBSESSED with mythologies (greek, roman, and of course; Egyptian), so this was a very nice read.
I really liked the alternate universe style of this book: Cairo, 1912, magic is real! The world-building is great, I was really able to picture it all in my head so clearly.
The characters were all really fun as well, I'm partial to Fatma, our protagonist, as I really really liked all the fancy suits she wore!
I also liked the scope of it all, the summit was one of my favorite parts and just really well done; the geopolitical situation was well described and extremely interesting and realistic.
I got to say though, the villain reveal was well done but I was not really deterred by the obvious red herring.
You will probably like this book if you like: alternate universes in which magic is real, cool main characters, djinn and various other supernatural beings, well-done geopolitics in fantasy.
