I cannot tell you in strong enough terms that you should read this book.

It is brilliant. Amazing characters, whose complexities and strengths are well wrapped in the heroic mode of traditional fantasy and science fiction, yet whose very existence turns the latent and sometimes dominant orientalism of those genres on their heads and shoves it out the door. Amazing alternate history that reads as a joyful and humorous excuse to really reimagine society and Edwardian geopolitics with a focus on Egypt. A mystery plot with twists and turns that, while predictable, are nevertheless a joy to experience. And with a sense of imagination that could - that does - recreate a whole world. I've been waiting for a novel from Clark for a long time, and it was worth the wait. I'm already waiting with baited breath for his next book!

Meh. This was a drag to get through. I only finished because the streets like this one a lot. I was bored for most of it, but the story was fine.

Interesting story, unique world building, fleshed out characters, nice character development. Although, I did figure out the baddie before the FMC.
