I found the narrator for this book boring, although exciting things happen to her the emotions fell very flat. I'm willing to chalk this up to bad translation, but even in content the story seems to be trying to tell stories of Spanish colonialism and violent revolution through this one woman's life and yet fails to engage with these events meaningfully or even paint a very vivid image of Caracas or Venezuela. Instead we get sort of unnecessary descriptions of peoples' appearances and little on their inner thoughts, beliefs, feelings for each other.

I tried with this one, but it was very bleak and never felt like something I was compelled to go back to.
Leesclub boek Venezuela: Echt enorm indrukwekkend en aangrijpend. Het beschrijft het leven in Caracas te midden van een ernstige crisis, in een Venezuela dat eigenlijk als een 'failed state' kan worden beschouwd. Ondanks dat ik veel documentaires en nieuwsberichten over Venezuela heb gezien en gelezen, heeft dit boek me pas echt laten voelen hoe het is om daar daadwerkelijk te wonen, erg beklemmend en deprimerend. Af en toe voelde de taal een beetje overdreven aan, en alsof Borgo haar kennis en vaardigheden wilde etaleren. Desondanks grote aanrader!
Wanted to read/learn about life in Venezuela, which this book does to an extent, but the story is also quite limited. You get a good sense of the violence, fear, and frustration/hopelessness, but not of the wider political backdrop that's causing much of it, esp. no word of how the U.S.'s sanctions contributes to the hyperinflation.
