Ok tale of a woman who lives in contemporary dystopian Venezuela. A lot of it is fantastical but I guess she was trying to make a point.
I love books that are about an individual’s will to survive in the face of adversity. I enjoy books that are set in the times of civil or political unrest, but serving as a harrowing and a bleak backdrop for our main characters to shine through. That’s why some of my fav reads came from Ireland and Sri Lanka.
So when I picked this book up, which is about this young woman trying to survive the darkest times in Venezuelan history, I had high expectations from it. And it failed. Sigh.
The story begins with Adelaida burying her mother, the only family she has ever known. As she returns to their shared apartment, she is confronted with the harsh realities of life in Caracas. Looters, masquerading as revolutionaries, take over her home, and Adelaida is forced into a desperate fight for survival. The novel chronicles her journey as she navigates the dangerous streets of Caracas, facing numerous challenges and making difficult choices to secure her future.
I really wanted to love this novel. Where it failed me was the super obvious uneven tone and writing style. The narrative voice was beautiful. Poetic. Sometimes too poetic, and repetitive. But the dialogues between two individuals? Painfully wooden and unrealistic, dare I say, soap opera-ish.
Overall, "It Would Be Night in Caracas" is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that offers a glimpse into the struggles of living in a country plagued by political instability and violence. I had practically zero knowledge about the recent Venezuelan history and I appreciate it introducing me to a topic which I believe might have been explored better in some other books that I am not aware of.
Oh well, on to the next one.
