finished my thicc af library book and now life is devoid of meaning again…
anyways glad this one brought me out of my 2-3 star rut! it moved quickly and was interesting & thrilling.
as some other reviews said, this was the opposite of a slow burn for me - was hooked at the beginning and it lost me a little toward the end.
appreciated the fresh dialogue & characters I could picture in my mind’s eye.
some solid writing and commentary too.
I look forward to the sequels & hope there are so that I am less confused!
MAYBE more on this later .

Was this supposed to have a coherent plot? I forced myself to finish it even though at about 80% I was super over it.

I knew I shouldn't have listened to the hype. I read this based on Ron Charles' review in the Washington Post and Steven King's recommendation on Mastodon. I finished it so by my personal rating system I gave it a 3 but I'm not reading anything else by this author.
I generally agree with the review by https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/17295672-jaidee who REALLY hated the book. Essentially, everyone except Neda's parents are despicable and they all smoke and drink to excess all the time. Characters do things because they are drunk. They become drunks because of the things they do. Not my kind of book.

4.5 rating. Deepit Kapoor knew what she was doing when she wrote this book. I keep seeing reviews of this being the first of a trilogy which makes sense considering the cliffhanger, though I admit I was a bit frustrated by the ending because I felt like we weren't given Neda's POV after the last event, while we were given Sunny and Ajay's.
Age of Vice would be considered the Indian version of The Godfather, no doubt on that. It's not an easy read by all means, there were times that I struggled with the book due to the thematics (tw: substance abuse, child abuse, rape, sexual assault, human trafficking, abortion, animal death, violence) but I still couldn't put the book down because I wanted to know how it would end for these characters. You can't help but feel and root for them. The change of POV isn't repetitive, if anything it gives us additional information to some of the events which I really appreciated.
The reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I felt that the final event (and its reveal) wasn't as "thrilling" as the other events explored in the book. It felt too short and quick, and maybe that was on purpose but considering the build up I wasn't too happy.

Loved the premise and the writing style. Parts of the book were very engaging. But overall the plot was loose and many of the characters completely unlikeable. I don’t regret reading it but I don’t get all the hype around this book either.

It's a long one! But I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed reading about the characters & how their lives intertwined. If you want to get stuck into a very character driven story I would recommend.
