I started reading this series back in middle school and never finished it, so I decided to give it a second try. I'm not enjoying them as much as I did when I was twelve, but I'm determined to get through this series. Five books in and I feel like the plot line is exactly the same every single time. And the teenage drama/juvenile writing style is starting to get to me. Here's hoping we get some more variety in the books to come.

This book was a little annoying as compared to the previous 'Princess Diaries' Books. It got old reading Mia go, "prom, prom, prom" and not have the nerve to be honest with her boyfriend about wanting to go.
Of course, it could be that I just am too old to remember what it's like to be 15!
This was still a decent book and a fun read.

I think this one was probably the best one so far out of the entire series. The humor was really top-notch and I liked all of the plots. Lilly was insufferable in this book, especially because it only seemed like she apologized to Mia because she felt bad about what she had done to Boris. But I'm proud of Mia for sticking up for Tina and Boris! I read in a tumblr post how Tina deserves better than Boris, but I can't remember much about their relationship other than they really like each other, so! We'll see! I think Lilly's treatment of Mia in this book is indicative of their relationship; Lilly expects a lot out of Mia and blames her when things don't go her way, and she'll put her down and call her names for not supporting her in a protest that truly does not have anything to do with her or mean anything. I think it sets up how their friendship is going to dissipate in the near future really well.
Michael and Mia's relationship is SO cute. They are so cute. He is so early 2000s boyfriend down to the kind of music he listens to. Any guy who listens to The Moldy Peaches goes up in coolness factor in my book. I think Mia's anxiety about what the perfect relationship should look like truly does shine through in this one. She wants to go to the prom because that's what seniors do, but Michael has no interest because he views it as lame and he doesn't want to hang out with anyone from school. It was so sweet how he suggested they dance at the Rainbow Room instead of going to prom. Maybe this is my perspective because I've done two proms and yeah they were fun, but not because of some boy. (I went with friends both times I've went- I really should've realized the whole aroace thing before my 20s) I've had more fun just hanging out at my friend's house than at some very expensive dance.
Also I should point out- Lana is SUCH a great foil to Mia. Lana is everything a princess "should" look like- she has blonder, shinier hair than Mia, she's the Western standard of beauty, she is popular, she's dating one of the hottest boys at their school. Yet she's constantly setting herself up for disappointment because just like Mia, she's going through the motions of what high school should look like rather than just experiencing it. She yells at Josh for ruining what should have been the most perfect night while Mia's perfect prom night was derailed because her mom went into labor. But Mia still considered that night one of the best nights of her life. Their boyfriends are considered the hottest guys in school but on completely different levels- Josh is popular because he's athletic while Michael is- well, he's not popular but he is considered very hot- because of his self-assuredness and confidence in his hobbies and intelligence. Mia and Lana have such an interesting dynamic that is fueled by jealousy and expectation. I cannot wait for the last couple of books!!
I also wouldn't make this into an entire season. Probably around 3 episodes but the season would end with the prom and Rocky being born. Sorry I keep talking about this, I just think it would be a huge hit. I would like it to keep its early 2000s charm. I'm working on a vision board right now complete with actors who I think would work in each roles, what clothes they would wear, and the soundtrack. I'm basically creating a TV bible... I'm a history major by the way! I've been on break for a week and I'm already SO BORED that I've resulted in creating a damn television show.
Here's some quotes!
"Peter's obsession with Korn soon drove her away, as it would any right-thinking woman." So true bestie.
"He is no longer going to be swinging by my Algebra class to give me strawberry gummi worms like he did this morning." Michael is SO cute!
"Mr. G just passed back the quizzes from Monday, and mine has a big red C minus on it and a note: SEE ME. Um, hello, Mr. G, like I didn't just see you AT BREAKFAST. You couldn't have mentioned this THEN?"
"I informed him that, though I might have been brought up in an upper-class household, and my parents are members of the intelligentsia, at heart I am as working class as he is, and have only the best interests of the common man at heart." God Lilly is THE WORST. This quote reminds me of the later seasons of Broad City when they get deeper into white feminism. Lilly may be 14 but she really is just... wow. Just wow.
"I was contemplating using my Christmas money for a complete set of Shania Twain CDs, but of course I couldn't ADMIT that to anyone." I feel you Mia. I was really obsessed with Blink-182 in elementary school and I hid it because what kind of ten year old likes Blink-182?
"If only Jeff and I had gotten a turn in that closet, I might finally have gotten a little action in my Victoria's Secrets, if you know what I mean. Just kidding. LOL." Shameeka is so funny, I wish she was featured more.
"I've helped you achieve self-actualization, Boris. You don't need me anymore. I have to turn my attention to another tortured soul." LILLY IS THE WORST!
"Not only did it cause the breakup of one of AEH's most longterm couples..." Lilly and Boris were only dating for like 5 months... oh high school.
"It's all Mia's fault." NO IT IS NOT LILLY! IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!
"Lilly's crying because she wants her boyfriend back." Sorry so many quotes are Lilly but GOD she really showed her true colors in this book.
"Or maybe not so existential, since I'm not even really sure what existential means." <3
"She threw my Fiesta Giles action figure- the one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's watcher, Giles, in a sombrero- against the wall!" I really appreciate Mia's appreciation of Giles, he's one of my favorite Buffy characters.
"Which is probably why he turned red all the way to his hairline after I finished kissing him, and went, "Mia," in a sort of strangled voice." God they're so cute!

This one so far has been my favourite. I hate Lilly & Mia is a dumbass at times, but these are so easy and fun to read. Still has some questionable language for younger people but this one less so than others. I think if it’s gone into not thinking the characters are great people (which honestly none of them really are mostly they all give off upper class snobs most of the time, who think they aren’t because they know richer people) it’s not so bad. Lilly was actually awful in this & no one called her out ever. Even when she was selfishly crying about her shit she didn’t care about what she’d said to Mia & Mia never called her out. I wish Michael found out he’d be so mad at her lol
Another fun book! This one was all about prom and Mia finally having her little brother! Like I mentioned in the last book, Mia is at that kind of annoying, whiny stage I don't like, but I know that changes soon. The strike part was pretty interesting and the whole part with Lilly. (who isn't the best friend I'd say in the world... But you can't always choose your best friends I guess.)
Lilly has been getting worse and worse, but in this one she was just plain awful. Mia was also pretty annoying, but I have to keep reminding myself that she's only a freshman in high school and still has a lot of maturing to do (especially learning to communicate). Of course Grandmere had her good and bad moments, but at least she was trying to help Mia with the whole Michael not wanted to go to prom thing.
