I have had my eye on this book for a while and was super excited to start reading it. Sadly I didn't love it as much as I thought I would and it took me a while to get through it. A lot of the subtext and metaphors were also lost on me. It picked up a great deal towards the end though and the language was beautiful. Also very interesting and sad reading about the caste system.

This is one of those books similar to a Toni Morrison novel where the writing is pure poetry. The story is fairly conventional with some unique aspects. The biggest problem with this book was due to my own ignorance about the many complicated aspects of Indian culture in the 20th century. I would love to learn more about the history of Indian and revisit this book some day.
