i have no idea why i had high expectations for this book. i normally never do, unless it's written by emily henry, who i know will guarantee that it's amazing. and i have no idea why i KEEP READING these kinds of books, even when there's only a 0.0001% chance it will get over two stars for me.
this book was...meh. forgettable. the romance was pretty insta, but the obstacles felt so forced and kind of random, to be honest. also—i didn't know that this was fake dating! i don't hate that trope, but its definitely not one of my favorites.
and, despite this book being ABOUT comedians and the WORLD of stand up comedy, i feel like this book was trying way too hard to be funny, when it just...wasn't. which was kinda sad, to be honest.
i actually liked farley though, for the most part. like, her views and actions to do with the romance i didn't like, because it was no different from literally any other fmc in a rom-com i've read. but, her internal struggles and fears, such as her need to make people happy and laugh, to kind of avoid difficult situations, were nice to read about, particularly because they resonated a lot with me. she also managed to tackle important topics in her standup with some humor, which i appreciated.
meyer on the other hand...meyer annoyed me. he seemed too much like the textbook brooding, grumpy 6ft guy...yet at the same time he was super childish and ridiculos? like, it felt like the author hadn't really made a decision on what his personality was like, so it was kind of a split between both. he wasn't really all that special, and he kind of annoyed me.
AND WHAT IS UP WITH HIS NICKNAME FOR FARLEY?!? like where THE HELL do you get fee from? like first off, it just sounds ridiclous, but i could get behind it IF her name was something like fiona or phoenix but farley? like bro—
and please, don't even get me started on the smut. it was small and really dissapointing, as i suppose meyer was as well.
though as previously mentioned, i liked the social commentary, tackling the misogny and sexism that comes in an industry like stand up comedy. i think it was pretty well handled and was a breath of fresh air in this ridiculuos exuse of a book.
one and a half stars, just for that.

Enjoyed this - a cute and fluffy romance. Could’ve done a lot more with the tension that comes with fake dating, friends to lovers, and forced proximity (some of my favorite tropes!). Unfortunately I was left wanting more of that, but in general I really enjoyed the story.

I'm not the biggest fan of romance novels, but something about this premise captured my attention. I think it reminded me a bit of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and her friend and mentor comedian Lenny Bruce. And I'm so glad I picked it up. This is well written, and I enjoyed the characters and their journey. I will say the fake dating didn't last as long as I thought it would, but I am glad that story moved away from some of the cliche romance tropes and onto what was important, the development of their relationship.
