This was an interesting read. I’m not sure that I really enjoyed the overall experience of reading it, but it did have a few entertaining parts and the ideas it explored were fascinating so it was nice to see them followed through. The endless chain of cause & effect, while somewhat tiring, is what really made the novel readable - there was always the question of “what will happen next?” But usually presented as “a character has done X, what will be the effect?” I didn’t really enjoy the prose so I’m not sure I want to pursue the sequels despite being curious about where the story could go next.

solid mathy scifi. I can see the basis of a great big story here, but my enjoyment was hindered by my small smooth dry brain, possibly too smart for to understand
This is a stunning and very realistic story of the future colonization of Mars. Beginning from the arrival of 100 scientists and engineers on Mars, the story covers a large span of years following the trials and tribulations of the settlers and the (perhaps inevitable) consequences of a colony on Mars. High in technical details, the reader is going out to come out of this novel with a very intimate and close knowledge of Mars' geography, its history and its conditions. Surprisingly though, this is in many ways a very character-centric and introspective story, with large sections of the book following characters rambling around the various parts of Mars and fighting their own demons (and others) to pursue their vision of the future. Also surprisingly, this is a very political story, focusing on not just the technical challenges and opportunities of life on Mars, but also the social and political challenges, and a chance to create a society from scratch based on the best ideals distilled from long and fractious history of Earth.

I felt too dumb for all of the geology and science at a certain point so just had to grit through that.
That being said, I enjoyed the political plot lines a lot and loved the beginning, the John Boone chapter and the gripping end.
Not sure I will read the sequel since there is just so much science stuff

Very good but too much detail made it too slow paced
The world built is impeccable, fantastic from start to finish. Every character full and even if you dislike them as a person experiencing their perspective is engrossing. Can’t wait to keep reading.
