I really don’t like the narrative framing of this book. I find it especially tedious in the first section where they discuss current problems in Europe. The description of Utopian society goes back and forth from trenchant criticism of capitalism or property ownership to descriptions of bizarre customs such as their marriage rituals.
The additional essays by China Miéville and Ursula LeGuin are good, analyzing and problematizing the concept of utopias. I especially like LeGuin’s description of the purpose of utopian fiction “to dislodge the mind from the habit of thinking that the way we live now is the only way people can live.”

Pretty much read like an undergrad's idea of what a perfect communist society would be like, with one important caveat: they're totally fine with slavery.

I recall reading this book, or excerpts from this book, many years ago, and finding it oddly interesting, but irrelevant. Now, knowing that Sir/St. Thomas More authorized the burning of six men for heresy, I cannot stomach seeing him described as a Humanist. Yes, despite the Catholic Church's equivocal canonization statement that he was a man limited by the culture of his times. Hmmm...

I feel like this was just an essay disguised as fiction. During my reading I kept feeling sorry for the translator 😭 I thought this book was so dense, and while it had interesting concepts, the description of them was so long that at times I couldn't read it and had to put it down.
That being said, I did think this book was valuable and provides an interesting insight into a potential utopia. Some aspects (like the misogyny) I expected to be present in More's thoughts, considering his time period, but I didn't exactly expect them to be reinforced in his Utopia. It was a bit jarring to read about a hypothetical equitable society which still had gender roles, although they were not enforced as much in this society. The part about them introducing their religion to the Utopians just rubbed me the wrong way for some reason, even though logically it's not a bad thing. *Edited to add because I forgot: I also don't like the part about laughing at other people's disabilities and mental disorders, even if he makes a point to say you shouldn't be cruel to them. I just don't agree. Other than that, I did think the concepts were interesting to read, and if they were applied (with some tweaks) would probably result in a fair society. However, I don't know if a society like this is possible, especially right now.
Overall, I think this book was okay, but I struggled to read it at times because of how dense it was and I thought some of the concepts could be improved upon. However, I think this is still worth a read.
