[3.5 stars] This was a romp. Very episodic and steeped in Japanese folklore, it's a good book for anyone who loved Inuyasha as a kid, and wants a book that captures the same mythical, macabre silliness. It reminded me of Gods of Jade and Shadow (which I loved) but with a bit less subtlety. The themes are delivered with a heavy hand, but the rest of the book is enough fun that I didn't mind.

The book is categorized as YA and the protagonist is supposed to be 17; however, the book is narrated in a way that causes are heroine to read MUCH younger. This book felt like it was in middle grade territory and I just could not get in to it.
I greatly enjoyed this book. I listened to the audiobook whenever I was traveling or at work and read the print version whenever I was able to since I'm a faster reader than what the audiobook could cover. This book was absolutely perfect with a fantastic twist that I didn't see coming.
Touched by a curse that is slowly turning her into a demon, young Otori ventures beyond her home and encounters spirits, monsters, and demons on her way to try to break the curse before it fully turns her into someone - or something - she doesn’t recognize. However, being a demon over being human has its perks, not to mention that it would allow her freedom after being shunned for not being a woman who doesn’t fit the general mold, and that temptation can be a very powerful thing - especially if you don’t know about the “fine print” part.
Perfect for the fans of “The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea” and “Six Crimson Cranes”, this Japanese inspired mythological fantasy is also a must read for those who love Studio Ghibli movies. If you are okay with audiobooks, I highly recommend experiencing the journey that way! Not only is the narrator amazing, but the voices that were used for different characters really brought the characters to life.

Really loved this one a lot. I loved Miuko as a narrator I loved her internal conflict and I loved how her internal conflict worked vs the external conflicts. In general I enjoy stories about curse transformations and I loved how this curse really paralleled Miuko's struggles as a woman living in a society that restricts the freedom of women. I like how the curse parallels Miuko's desire for freedom and how she is left struggling to choose between freedom and her humanity. Overall this story was super clever and had so many lovable characters. And I really enjoyed the lore.
charming and fun
Charming and fun. Truly enjoyed this tail and wished we had more time with this world and characters. Happy I picked this one up!

This book felt... weirdly paced. The world is beautiful and all of the world-building is incredibly interesting but it felt too fast-paced to be able to enjoy it fully.
That being said, I loved the characters, Geiki being my favorite. It was definitely reminiscent of anime like Inuyasha or films like Spirited Away so it definitely scratched that itch.
Also: if I ever read the word lugubrious once more... it is one time too many.
