What Madeline Miller did with Greek myths, Traci Chee has done with Asian folktales. I suspect the Asian cultures and names are a hybrid, but it feels as familiar as reading the adventures of the Monkey King, but modernized to be strong and feminist.
I listened to the audiobook which was 12 hours. Shoutouts to the reader Grace Rolek for her and Chee's joint creation of creating some real fun characters. From mischievous young boys to relatable monkey spirits, to forest spirits, this story's got some real delights.
Plus the book is straight up funny, which is not something I would have expected
Edit: Okay, I just downloaded the accompanying PDF, and yes the language is made up. The PDF is a list of terms from this world, and if you look online, you can find Traci Chee talking about some of the terms (and how they're pronounced). Neat!

As this was my first book to read to by Chee, I was so pleasantly surprised by this YA novel. I’ve been enjoying more and more books that include spirits, demons, monsters and such and this is a title with these aspects teeming from its chapters. The plot twist of the year for me so far was in this book! May be a minute before I read another Chee, but I’ll know what to expect from her writing when I return: enjoyment.

This is a nice book, and is adventurous and a bit fun, and sometimes cute, but I couldn't help but feel a bit dissapointed by the end of it. The story was interesting and the second half took me by surprise in many ways, and I enjoyed it because it was more fun, but I kind of felt that the repetitive critiques on the western patriarchy and the constant thoughts our main character has about herself and other women for the sake of establishing this book as a sort of feminist lookback at history, all made the book kind of drag on a bit. It was so constant and not always written or worded very well, so I did not particularly enjoy that aspect of the book, and it took away my enjoyment from the book as a whole. I liked many little things about the story, and while I felt like almost too many characters got introduced in the secons half, it was still relatively charming. I think it is a nice book for a younger audience perhaps, because I don't think the feminist aspects really reach a woman who understands all this stuff already, and the writing of it would perhaps serve a younger person more.
