“I think you believe you ought to be small," he said softly, almost meditatively. "I think you have been taught that greatness does not belong to you, and that to want it is perverse. I think you have folded yourself into the shape that others expect of you; but that shape does not suit you, has never suited you, and all your young life, you have been dying to be free of it."
A hugely entertaining YA fantasy adventure in a fascinating world. I think more fantasy novels should have footnotes with pronunciation guides and explanations of the mythology. Miuko is a wonderful character and her hero's journey feels both mythic and real.
My only critique is that the ending wrapped things up a bit too neatly.

What if Demon Slayer and Tokyo Ghoul were combined and rewritten by Studio Ghibli? Welp, this is it. Miuko reminds me of a grown up Nezuko, witty and unabashedly herself.

I buddy read this book with Khushi Kishore.
I went into this really knowing next to nothing about it. All I know was that it was based on Japanese folklore. Ultimately, I thought this was so cute. It deals with themes of sexism and transphobia, as well as some other dark themes. However, these were all handled very well. The MC is a young teen girl, and she ends up surrounding herself with the most incredible, whimsical friends that just made for a beautiful, touching story. I highly recommend for readers of ya and folklore.

Beautifully written and gorgeous world building.
The only thing I had a hard time with was the in-your-face feminist one liners~ loved the message, but I found it took you out of the book.
