Picture books can be fun and entertaining, but they can also be profound and deeply moving. Such is the case with this beautiful book. Dementia and Alzheimer's can be hard to explain to children when they experience it with a loved one. This book doesn't sugarcoat the pain and challenges of memory loss, but it tenderly explains it in an easy to understand way, brilliantly using balloons as a metaphor of what happens to the memories of loved ones affected by dementia. Together, the text and illustrations make for a beautiful and tender story--one that deeply touched me. Picture books aren't just for children.

If you're not prepared to cry, this isn't the book for you...I WEPT. A very sweet book about James and his grandfather and the connection they have over balloons (or memories). James' grandfather starts to lose his balloons, but James has valued them so much that he can retell his grandfather the stories behind all of the balloons and help him keep them. If you know someone who has suffered from memory loss (Alzheimer's, dementia, etc.) this book will absolutely crush you in the best way.

This is a lovely, lovely, lovely book - a sensitively told story about a grandfather with dementia from the perspective of a grandson trying to understand: beautifully illustrated, using the metaphor of balloons for memories. Grandpa can't hold onto his balloons anymore. I absolutely loved the drawings, especially the facial expressions on the family members. I appreciated the mixed-race couple and the intergenerational love and kindness in this important book. Highly recommended for families and libraries.

Incredibly sweet book about memories, growing older, and helping to keep family stories alive.

A meaningful way to explain dimentia or Alzheimer's to a young child. Sad by nature but an uplifting ending.

Gorgeous, lovely, and sad.

Oh my word this book HURTS. It's stunning, but it hurts so badly. Well done, Oliveros.

Sweet, beautifully illustrated story about a boy and his grandfather’s memory loss. Highly recommended for ages 5-8.

I loved the storytelling in this book. Great book for observational conversation within the pictures. A good way to talk about family members passing away or getting older. Enforces the importance of family time and focused communication.

Demonic.
