The central mystery of the novel ends up being undone as part of the protagonist's voyage of self discovery which while perhaps understandable didn't really work for me...

Gabriele’s life has been on hold up until now. Sure, she’s got a college degree, a steady boyfriend, and had a decent (if low-paying) job at a bookstore. But when that steady boyfriend suddenly proposes marriage at the beginning of The Vietri Project, by Nicola DeRobertis-Theye, something becomes unmoored in Gabriele. She dumps the boyfriend and follows a wild hair to Rome. This novel is a slow journey not just to Rome but also to Gabriele finally realizing who she wants to be...

A really good read!! About an Italianx from San Francisco rediscovering her family, country, and following an intriguing story that she encountered that brought her to do so. Really reflective in a personal way. Dialogue is written in a postmodern narrative style and is easy to read. Would recommend if interested in a pensive developing-plot literary novel!

This woman in her 20s works at a bookstore that gets requests of old and odd books from a man named Vietri that lives in Italy.  She decides to go to Italy to find the man and learn more about him.

The book sounded interesting and it was plugged by someone I like on IG (I now know that they are friends and she was probably just pushing the book so her friend would get some sales/interest), but I found it to be very boring.  It is a short book at only 224 pages, but I was having such a hard time getting through it.  I hardly ever quit books, but I have too many to read, so I am DNFing this book, which is stating something.  I started it on 7/14 and I should've been finished in 2-3 days, but it is now 10 days later and I'm only 100 pages in and just can't read anymore.  The plot sounds interesting, but the story is boring and seems to meander a lot.  The writer is a good writer, but I feel like she is trying to be too lyrical.

I tried to like this more than I did. I found it dry and did not like the narrator. The writing style also didn't work for me. Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced copy!
