Such a cute, fast paced, feel good story. So happy the author included the recipe for the buns!

I recently did a book discussion on literary cookbooks (cookbooks inspired by works of literature); one of the patrons attending the discussion suggested I read this book. (I only discovered later that it's on the list of books up for a local award this year.)
I really, REALLY enjoyed this book! I love that the protagonist in this story, Bee, is feisty and independent, yet she very quickly becomes close to people in her life. She's got a unique skill for baking (which I love), and as an added bonus, she's got magic skills--that of incorporating her current mood into the items she bakes. At first, that is a problem for Bee. But once she learns to harness this power, it works largely to her advantage.
I had a great time following Bee on her adventures, and I was pleased, at the end of the story, to find the recipe for her mentor's cinnamon rolls!

I typically enjoy Zahler's books, but this one was particularly fun to read. It has many fairy tale type elements: missing parents, helpful guardians, evil guardians, simple magic, and a precocious pet. There are also pirates. All of these come together to make an exciting, adventurous tale. There is a quest and magical baked goods that made me hungry for raspberry tarts. I recommend this to any person who enjoys fairy tale type stories of magic and epic quests. I feel the story is not being served well by this rather boring and innocuous cover.

I liked the idea of B being able to bake emotion into her treats. I think there’s a movie like that...Waitress? Like Water for Chocolate has a similar theme.
I felt like the story went on for quite a while but that could have been me. It felt unnecessary to follow some of the character’s story arcs (Captain Z to be specific).
I listened to this book and I really enjoyed the little musical interludes.
So, it was good but I wouldn’t be seeking sequels if they existed.

magic, mages, pirates?.. COUNT ME IN. never knew I would enjoy this cozy middle grade book

It was pretty predictable but I’ve never read a book where the magic is baking emotions into food and then people being able to feel those emotions.
