My second graphic novel of the day. This is what happens when you are under the weather and don't feel like venturing outdoors.

"Anya's Ghost" is a graphic novel targeted at the young adult set. The title character Anya, is a teenage Russian immigrant attending an American private school. She has only one friend and not a very good one at that...until she falls down a well and stumbles across a ghost. The ghost decides to be Anya's new best friend. Think standard high school fare with a ghost thrown into the mix.

Overall, an enjoyable read. I liked the style of the drawings. The graphic style reminded me of one of my favorites: Persepolis.

I am pleasantly surprised by this book. I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. I had picked this up from the library hoping for a quite and light read, and that's exactly what I got!

The things I didn't Like:
(I don't really have much for here)
1. I do wish the ending had been wrapped up differently. If there was 5 extra pages explaining about whats happened after all that's happened happened.

The things I did Like:
1. The color scheme. I felt it was a very good idea to have everything either grey, white, black or purple. I felt it enhanced the story.
2. The art. One could really see what each person was thing from their facial expressions, made it fun and easy to read.
3. The plot twist. I was not expecting that, I knew something had to happened but wasn't sure what.
4. Anya, it was fun to watch her grow and learn from beginning to end.

The only reason I gave this 4/5 stars is that I felt there was something lacking from making this a fantastic 5 star book. All in all i did enjoy this and would recommend this to anyone wanting a fun, quick graphic novel.

All I could think/say (and yes, I did in fact mumble this under my breath) for the next thirty minutes was, "It's a comic book. Oh my God, it's a comic book. It's a FREAKING comic book. It is an honest to God, freaking book of comical content!" I almost hyperventilated. On my list of things I thought I would never EVER read in the entirety of my life, this would make number two. A comic book. A freaking comic book! Or "graphic novel," if you prefer. But, as I had sworn to do since this was my second "Blind Date Book," I sucked it up and read.

The ghost was a psychopath, the popular girl was a love-sick pushover, the love of the protagonist's life was a user and overall manwhore, and clearly everyone should just stick to their own ethnicity, because that's about the only support you're going to find. The lesson of this story is, not everyone is who they say they are or who they appear to be. There are two sides to every story and make sure you have the facts, otherwise you might find yourself in some serious crap.

I'm not entirely sure how I felt about this book. It wasn't completely terrible, as I had imagined it would be. The story was fairly easy to follow, despite the mainly visual storytelling. Half the story was images and the other half was narration, so it was simple enough to follow along with the plot. I liked its simplicity, but I still can't entirely get over the fact that it was mainly a picture-book, which I have not read in nearly ten years, unless it was to someone of that age. In the end, the story didn't bother me as much as I had feared, and that plot twist at the end was pretty neat.

had this on my list since i was 11 and 4 years later i finally got my mom to order this thru amazon. i read it all in one sitting. this was really good! i love how realistically the teenagers spoke, how edgy they were, as well as the pop culture references. the domo plushie spoke to me personally.

Random thoughts on this book
• I recently watched an episode of Hotel Transylvania the series with a doll in it that really reminded me of this book.
• The art was pretty cool
• I’m glad this exits: since it’s on bullying and I’ve never read of a Russian character before
• I don’t understand why it wasn’t creepier? I mean there’s clearly a murderer here and so it’s definitely for older audiences but it was not that creepy.
• The storyline was sort of cheesy. Like we’ve seen this plenty of times before
• Wasn’t a huge fan of any of the characters
• 2 stars.
