If Expecting Better is the exemplar for 5-star content in this specific genre, this is probably 4.5 stars, but it’s still an excellent book.
It’s a little less heavy on the hard data than Expecting Better was and is supplemented a bit more with the author’s own opinions and experiences… but that’s not really Emily Oster’s fault given her own admission that there simply *is* less data on early childhood than on pregnancy.
I did enjoy the addition of a bit of (very light) decision theory and discussion of how to apply it to your life. How do you combine a set of imperfect preferences on a given topic (what works best for your family), Bayesian priors (whether strong or weak), and the data (imperfect as it is) to arrive at a decision?
Predictably, I’m very glad I read this book as part of my current project to develop a mental framework for parenting before ever becoming a parent.

I really appreciate Ostler’s style of making information easy to digest, giving you the tools to analyze new information—and leaving you to it to make your own choices. That might not be for everyone (especially if you are looking for true “advice”) but it was very helpful for me to feel a little less in panicked about parenthood.
There’s so much fear mongering around these topics (typically called “the mommy wars”) her more practical and clinical approach was refreshing.

I admittedly did not read all of this, since my kids have aged out of most of the issues covered in this book, but I did like the data on SIDS, sleeping, vaccines, toddler discipline, screen time, and potty training. Definitely recommend to any new parent, although you won’t find an actual how-to on any of the issues, but you’ll get the best data and data analysis on what you and your family may want to do. But you’ll see her references to the books that would teach you the how-to.
