Another 5⭐️

It’s very readable, fast paced, and truly just sucks you in to this magical and vibrant world. It was great experiencing the constant barrage of tough choices most of the characters had to make because of their personal beliefs, cultural beliefs, common traditions, and moral obligations.
It was so hard watching Ali having to endure a toxic ass family. And on the other end, I was grateful we had Dara’s POV to gain more info into his trauma and realizations that he’s just a tool for the Nahids, Ifrit, humans, etc. and I really hope he finds peace one day

While in many ways this is a step up from the disappointing first book, there were so many parts which just didn't land right with me. A lot of the characterization which would have made the story enjoyable for me was sacrificed in the name of plot and as a result I once again found myself caring less about everything in general.

We now have Dara's POV and to be honest his chapters were the worst. He added next to nothing to the story and felt like he was just there to show what the villain was up to. He had no development, no agency, he remained as flat as ever and he honestly was a slave to the plot (pun intended), he could've been left dead and a new character used.

Nahri fares slightly better but she is still drowned by the major players and general plot. Again she's very static as a character and I found her boring. Since she's overshadowed by pretty much everyone else she falls into the background. Her mini plot about the hospital also felt disingenuous as she has almost no on screen dealings with shafit and for her to suddenly care didn't feel in keeping with her character. She does have some brief moments where she shines but this rarely happened and I think how she was introduced and positioned in the story weakened her greatly. She's certainly not a driving force for the story and it made her forgettable.

Ali remains the best written character as he is actually struggling and trying to make change and he grows a lot in the book. I really like watching how his relationship to his family started to fall apart and how he's given the chance to start anew but his sense of duty to his home keeps pulling him back. In general, removing the romance made the characters much better written, which says it all really.

I think my main gripe is that the presentation of the factions is so all over the place I end up caring for none of them, so when Daevabad is under threat I simply couldn't care if it was all burned to ashes. It made the stakes meaningless because like in the first book almost nothing was directly tied to the characters, it's all abstract and disjointed. I get that it's a 'no one is right' sort of conflict but books like Defy the Night did this so much better as the conflict was directly and intimately tied to the POV character and it made me care about it because I cared about them.

The magic system also turns into a plot device this book which again took away from the danger and tension as the magic simply fixed things when it needed to.

However there were some scenes that kept my attention and set things up well, but these were sadly few and far between.

I also didn't understand the book's pacing, especially with Dara's chapters as they seem to backtrack in time and so repeat scenes that have already played out, this made it temporally jarring and also quite repetitive. The middle of the book also really spins its wheels in the mud and completely stagnates til the last third and it was very tedious to get through.

I honestly think the twist with Nahri being shafit was so incredibly weak, she would have better served as having known this the entire time AND be their representative in the books. This could have better shown the tension between Daeva and Shafit and al Qatanis (since we'd have one POV each) and given a side for us to root for or sympathize with.

Overall this book is extremely ambitious but I feel it falls short in execution, it trips over itself in its complexity and feels very distant/ impersonal which makes it difficult to care about events. I will see if the last book sticks the landing but I do feel other books have done these concepts far better.
