Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a fun ride full of interesting mysteries that I mostly solved with easy but still story by story this eccentric detective grew on me and I found myself truly enjoying a book after a long reading slump that was on and off during the whole year.

Note to self: Watson got married in '89 and was hit by a bullet in Afghanistan

Funny little mystery that I am not going to review per se, but I will give you these tidbits:

1. Holmes receives what he thinks is an invitation and remarks that invitations always "call upon a man either to be bored or to lie" - Holmes' less than social tendencies shine through here.

2. Watson is reading aloud from a newspaper: "Two days later--that is, on Wednesday last--there is a curt announcement that the wedding had taken place, and that the honeymoon would be passed at Lord Backwater's place, near Petersfield. Those are all the notices which appeared before the disappearance of the bride."

"Before the what?" asked Holmes with a start.

"The vanishing of the lady."

"When did she vanish, then?"

"At the wedding breakfast."

"Indeed. This is more interesting than it promised to be; quite dramatic, in fact."

"Yes; it struck me as being a little out of the common."

3. Holmes and Lestrade talking about the bride's wedding clothes being found in the Serpentine:

LESTRADE: "They were found floating near the margin by a park-keeper. They have been identified as her clothes, and it seemed to me that if the clothes were there the body would not be far off."

HOLMES: "By the same brilliant reasoning, every man's body is to be found in the neighbourhood of his wardrobe. And pray what did you hope to arrive at through this?"

This is a short and sweet Holmes story. It is unique in the fact that there is nothing truly remarkable in the outcome of the case or the deductions. For this reason, it is very refreshing. And Holmes is so endearing, it makes me laugh but I love him even more for wishing the newlyweds and the man left at the altar to make their peace with each other over dinner.

What made this story so interesting to me was not so much the mystery involved, but rather the insight into Holmes's character and his view of aristocrats, Americans, and angry police inspectors. I was impressed with his composure during these situations. He always managed to make his opinions known without being TOO insulting. He's a pretty cool guy, you know. I'm not sure why the recent fancy has been to try to make his character into a sociopath, because I don't see that in his stories at all. I'll harp on that another time, though.
