I am stunned by the storytelling in this series. Wow. The characters. Wow. And, as much as the narrator's normal accent drives me a little bonkers (I'm not sure where she's from, but her short Es are so odd), she does a fantastic job with all the character's voices. I hardly ever keep barrelling through a series once I've started, but this one has me hooked! It just keeps getting better!

For me, this series is getting off to a slow start. Book #2 definitely has more going on than in Book 1.

But I have been promised a snarky talking cat, so stick around I shall.

Being a cat person, I love that Sir Kipling can now talk with Lily.

Only complaint is the sections where Sebastian and Lily separately ruminate about their feelings for one another - a little wearying, in my opinion.

But otherwise, nice story development and plenty of good magic!

I continue to enjoy this series. The small episodic nature is an interesting breakdown. We finally got a talking cat (which I was promised by the author herself.)

The romantic elements are played up a bit in this one, although not full blown like The Paper Magician. That is good, I'm not looking for a romance although I certainly expect some in a young adult work.

The magic world continues to get more interesting. There are some clear HP parallels here to squibs and muggles, but distinct in important ways.

Lily's character choices in this book are a bit of a head scratcher, especially the second episode. Everyone in her life says, "this is a bad idea." Despite being the smartest character, she ignores everyone and goes off to, what turns out to be, a bad idea! I think this is somewhat accounted for by the series-long desire to discover more about her past and her family but still it was an irrational leap for an otherwise seemingly rational character.

Can't wait to start book 3!
