This was all over the place! Maybe if I read it back when it was released, I would have liked it better. Probably not, but at least I finished it. I'm not a fan of the art and don't really feel the need to continue reading more volumes.

Life lesson from The Wallflower #1:
When reading about ridiculousness and prettiness one should always be humming this: http://youtu.be/Ye7PIyIcCro
Your Welcome. XD

First exposed to The Wallflower through seeing the first couple episodes of the anime I found the story and art style to be interesting but most importantly it was funny, over the top, and seemed to be coming from completely out of nowhere. I'm glad to see that this correlate even more so in the manga.

It took me a bit longer then I expected to get into the story which I contribute to the abruptness of the first few pages introducing you to the characters and the story by literally dropping you in mid-conversation. Since these pages don't really give you much context it took me a bit to adjust to what was going on and who each character was even though I had some previous knowledge of what I was supposed to be seeing. But getting past this, by the time I was done the first chapter the story was in full swing and everything started to come together in a funny and bizarre story of Sunako and her strange, forced interactions with four "creatures of brightness" who are now living with her after years of hiding from the world with her plummeting self-esteem and increasingly psychotic personality.

Things get mapped out for you pretty quickly and the back and forth of,
People: "You just have to try harder to be pretty or else you'll be ugly forever!" Sunako: "adhfjkadhfjlahd! NOOOOOOOOO! Die! *nose bleed*"
occurs throughout each chapter giving you short moments to show that on top of her damaged interior she really is quite pretty.

A brief final moment to talk about the guys in the story, you're first given there names through their conversation (which is very confusing) and a small glimpse of their shallow outlook and personalities but nothing really beyond that. If one wasn't the main possible love interest for Sunako and another didn't have black hair they would all just start to blend together. I'm thinking that this will improve as the manga progresses, once the story is fully established they will hopefully start to take on some distinguishing factors and given back-stories that might make me actually care about them as characters.

Overall this was a laugh out loud read that isn't to be taken to seriously. :) I'm eagerly looking forward to reading through the series and seeing where this goes and how the characters come to develop beyond being "oh so pretty" :D

*starts humming*

Growing up this was one of my favorite animes/manga. I re-read it 3 times and I think it's perfect for the Halloween season, if you don't want to read it, definitely watch it. The plot is hilarious! It's a reverse harem with a twist!
description
Here's the summary: This follows Sunako a socially awkward girl that has low self-esteem because teens are mean and she was insulted and rejected by a guy she liked. In comes her aunt who is the owner of a huge mansion where four very handsome high school students live (for free), demands the boys to transform her niece into the "perfect lady," and in return, they will be able to continue living there for free.

If you like heartwarming love stories, with some dark comedy and a coming of age story, definitely try this one out!

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

I wasn't sure if I wasn't gonna like this, so I decided to try reading the first volume, and it didn't go so well. First, the manga panels are super busy with lots of stuff filling almost all the empty space. And a lot of the speech bubbles as well as other stuff overlap into other panels, so individual panels kind of meshed together, so I felt overwhelmed. I won't say I had trouble following what happened, but the art itself was almost distracting from the story itself. Second, the humor isn't great. I think I've heard the same lines from the girl and the boys a million times. It's almost always something along the lines of "I can't look into the light, I'm a pitiful girl" or "She's a pitiful girl, complain complain". I'm already tired of it. I'm painstakingly aware how "pitiful" she is. This leads into my next point which is the lack of individuality between the four boys. I mean they are almost always all four together. Maybe it was my bad for not paying attention to who's who, but again, it feels like they're all the same person. Except for this one scene where one of the guys is
taking the girl home from the playground.
Which I really did appreciate, and felt it was spectacularly swoon worthy, but then the next scene was back to all four boys again. I think, if my memory is correct, this did lead into character development for the girl, but still, I was hoping for the focus to stay on the boys for longer. I will say they did make some atrocious comments towards the girl, which I really didn't appreciate. Though I'm not knocking the idea that they grow from their mistaken ideas.
I do want to emphasize that despite the character flaws, I could have read on longer if the art style wasn't as distracting as it was. I don't doubt that these characters could have phenomenal character development later on, but it's not worth it for me.

Dated, but enjoyable for the most part. Fans of Princess Jellyfish will enjoy it, I think.

It was fun revisiting this series. This anime was one of the first ones I watched, and I enjoyed the manga just as much. It's funny and entertaining! If you like a slow burn romance with wacky characters, I recommend it. Just keep in mind that this came out in the early 2000s and some things didn't age well.

I really like this series. It’s entertaining!

From what I remember, back in my manga-reading days (2007-2009), The Wallflower was by far my most favourite manga series. I adored Sunako and loved the dynamic and chemistry between her and Kyohei.

Sadly, I never followed the series through to the end because I eventually lost interest in reading manga. The internet tells me that the manga only just finished earlier this year at 36 volumes and I -think- I only read them up to the 21st volume. I guess if I'm ever bored and want a good laugh, I may just pick up this series again and learn the outcome of Sunako and Kyohei's crazy love-hate relationship. The good thing about reading manga is that it rarely requires much thinking so catching up should be a breeze :)
