Although I find it amazing that all of this would happen to mere 15 year-olds, and that some parts were quite dark, it really reels me in! I'm definitely looking forward to when the next two come for me at the library, so I can find out what happens to Sunako-chan!

Picked this up because it met requirements for a challenge. Definitely not my usual genre, though I have read some manga in the past that I enjoyed.

This one was ... cute, but interesting (in a bad way). Boys break out in rashes when they see an ugly girl. Bah. It really sends the wrong kind of message. It's one of those stories like Grease where the boys won't like her unless she wears sexy clothes and fancies up her hair.

Though it's not the boys who are really pushing the poor girl in this story -- it's her aunt, who hires the boys to help make her niece more attractive. What the hell kind of aunt is that?!

But the boys aren't all bad, they are kind of cute when they try to be helpful, and watching their attempts was somewhat amusing. I think her attire at the party was a little quick, considering the complete lack of "progress" until then. But I did like that in a way, because it shows that she's capable of playing the game, she just doesn't care to.

And somehow there are many more books in this series! I guess because karate chopping party guests is not acceptable. Maybe I'll read more when I'm looking for something light and easy and some boys to be mad at.

Sunako is weird, scary, hilarious and cute. She's a gothic loner who loves horror, darkness and prefers conversations with a mannequin and a skull... all a result of once being called ugly. For two years she hasn't looked in a mirror and gets blinded and suffers nose-bleeds when she sees beautiful radiant beings.

Unfortunately she's forced to share her aunt's mansion with four handsome house-mates who can live rent free if they turn Sunako into a lady. Good luck lads because Sunako has other ideas and the consequences are seriously batty.

Read the whole series.
This is very emo/goth 2000s, also very campy (not sure if accidentally or planned).
The fact that 20 years later we have words like aromantic and asexual, which were not very widespread at the time this manga was written, kinda sorta recontextualizes everything that’s going on here and makes the attempts to make the protagonist(s) fall in love even more hilarious.
But it also gets very repetitive and there is no real progress, neither for the character development nor the plot, which is a little frustrating after almost 150 chapters.
A fun, nostalgic read for me nonetheless.

Perfect Girl Evolution Vol. 1
by Tomoko Hayakawa

5 out of 5 stars

To be honest, I still really like to reread this manga. I love how Sunako-Kyohei's development. At the end of the day, they are just cute together.

Actually, the main message that delivered by Hayakawa is really good. No matter what other people said to us, especially the negative one, we shouldn't be that much affected. If we aren't wrong, why bother, then?

================================

Aku lagi kangen banget baca komik ini. Akhirnya, aku baca komik ini lagi. Ini udah ketiga kalinya kayaknya. Meskipun begitu, aku tetep ngakak waktu baca komik ini. Iya lah. Kelakuan kelima orang itu kocak banget. Nggak bisa nahan ketawa deh.

Pertama, aku mau bahas covernya. Sebenernya keren sih. Iya lah, yang jadi cover kan Kyouhei. Tapi kenapa juga bajunya kayak gitu? Kurang garang menurutku. Huhu. Ahh, tapi Kyouhei tetep cakep kali.
Kedua, penampilan Sunako di awal kemunculannya bener-bener istimewa. Iya lah. Sebenernya kan Sunako cantik, Cuma nggak mau perawatan.

Tapi mereka sweet banget kalau jadi pasangan. Ahh, so sweet.

Intinya, komik ini lucu, bikin ngakak, so sweet dan bisa menyebabkan oembaca ketawa sendiri malam-malam. Haha.

a nice start, I like Sunako-chan!!

I loved it!!! For once the heroine is not a pretty girl and the manga is really funny!I love Kyohei he is not the typical shojo boy, he is bad ass and cynical and mean! He is not a night in shinning armor. I also watched the drama and the manga is really better.

This review covers only the first four volumes, because that is where I gave up, there is no way I'm reading 30+ volumes of this. The premise is pretty simple - four super popular gorgeous guys are offered the opportunity to not pay rent as tenants of a huge mansion, as long as they can turn the landlady's niece into a "proper lady". This is a particular challenge because the niece, Sunako, would rather spend her time watching slasher films and avoiding human company. This setup seems like it would be funny, but it is just not possible to ignore how problematic the premise is - everyone agrees that Sunako does need a makeover, and her worth is tied to her being an archetypical "lady". But what bugged me the most, these four boys live in that mansion rent free and treat Sunako like a maid! They expect her to cook and clean, and only notice there is something wrong with her whenever household chores are not up to snuff. Nothing really happens through four volumes, no character development at all, no plot I can see, and the jokes become repetitive very quickly.
