Hmmm very okay? Not anything special but there were things I enjoyed. Not sure I would particularly recommend it though.

I’d give this book a 3.5. It is a quick read about an Irish family with plenty of disjunction. But how can you not like a flawed Irish family with secrets, and all the guilt and shame to go with it? And although the ending was predictable, how could you not find a soft spot in your heart for the Brennans. Guess it’s my own Irish family tugging at my heart strings.

This was the March pick for the Modern Mrs. Darcy Book Club.

In the first pages of this novel, we meet Sunday Brennan. She’s in an LA hospital recovering from a car accident that she caused because she’d had too much to drink. Reluctantly, Sunday agrees to let her brother take her home to their Irish Catholic family in New York. It doesn’t take long for Sunday to question her decision. Five years before, she left her family and high school love with little explanation to move to California. As much as Sunday would like to keep her secrets close to the vest, a threat to the family’s pub pushes her to share everything and when she does, more secrets than she knew existed come to light.

I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy this book, especially once I realized that it is written from multiple points of view. Well, I was wrong! I didn’t feel like this family drama was contrived - I grew to really care about the characters and became invested in their growth. The multiple POV worked well in this novel and helped me as the reader get to know the family on a more intimate level. And, the themes of shame and long-held secrets were powerful but also relatable. The author authentically captured the ripple effect of secrets protected by shame and the damage that can do to a family.

I liked the family dynamics of this book. I wanted to be a Brennan sibling. I found the ending too abrupt. A major discovery is made and the book just ends. It felt like an easy way out
