This book is about how a pregnancy and abortion affect two teenagers and the people near to them over the years. It's also about how we feel both separate and connected to our families, friends and communities, and of course how the absence and presence of mothers in our lives affect us. This book is set in my current home of Oceanside, which was fun for me.

How does one choice you make at a young age effect the rest of your life?
The secret you thought you’ve been able to keep hidden seems to continue demanding attention and showing up when you least expect it.
This book pulled me in from the first page, was lyrical and beautiful and demanded my attention, which I happily gave.
It tells the story of Nadia Turner, from her teenage years when making a difficult choice, throughout her early twenties and telling the heartbreaking story of how that one choice she made as a teenager stayed with her and how it changed her path and the path of those around her.
I loved the complexities of all the characters, they each had their own story to tell and their own reasoning and justifications. You may not agree with what they did but the author wrote in such a way that you understood why. Their stories were heartbreaking, real, and honest.

If you enjoyed the vanishing half, you will like this one as well. This was her first novel, Bennett's clean writing style and character development, allows you to feel as tho you really know them. Many people thought this book was about abortion- IMHO-That was not her major point, I think it was about criticism. More than that -Hypocritical or Hypocrites. The Church ladies, the gossip etc. Pretty fast read!

Thoughtful and touching exploration of what motherhood means and how we interact with it. I found it sweet, and I cared about the characters, but it lacked the electric spark I would have liked to take it to a 5.
