Multiple POVs, LGBTQ positive, challenges segregation in 17th century Nantucket, and powerful women. Loved!

I could not get into the story.

The concept is intriguing but the anachronistic language and decontextualized sensibilities took me so far out of the story that I had a hard time finishing it.

Enjoyable historical novel focusing on 3 strong women. The Eliza character was an excellent depiction of a “good/liberal” white women

I had higher expectations for this book after reading the cover story. It felt forced like it was confining the story to stick to an outline. I appreciate where the author was trying to go, but for me, it never really got there and I heard more of the author's voice than that of the actual characters.

The days leading up to the Great Fire of 1846 find three extraordinary women fighting individual battles. Meg, Eliza, and Maria struggle with identity, equality, and forbidden love, and when the fire descends upon their beloved island, they are thrown together, left with hard-hitting decisions: what to save and what to let go. Tragedy can change the course of anyone's life. It can also teach one to prioritize. As this trio withstands the flames, they uncover truths about each other, and themselves, valuable lessons extending way beyond the material. Gerstenblatt writes a gorgeous novel rich with history and memorable characters, and while this tiny nugget of history spans over the course of a few days, the story packs a powerful punch. Loved! TY to Get Red PR for sharing an advance copy.

Audiobook. Interesting history. Once again all the limitations of being a woman in the 1800’s, especially a Black woman.
