This is the seventh in the Books of the Raksura fantasy series, a series that I love. This is currently the last book in the series, and I slowed down as I read it, because I didn't want to reach the end. I love these characters, Moon most of all. The world itself is also deeply engaging: fantastical, frightening, replete with shapeshifters, flying ships, leviathans, huge and wondrous trees, a broad variety of sentient species, and a vast backdrop of history. One caveat: this is a poor entry point into the series, picking up mid-adventure, right after the end of book six. I have no other caveats. If you haven't tried the Raksura books, I recommend them very highly. Begin at book one with "The Cloud Roads." (Now I'll go off into a corner and mourn that there aren't any more of these stories. I miss Moon already.)

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

The final installment of this series leaps into action immediately where the previous book leaves off. There more change in point of view, which works extremely well since the story is so much larger — and the consequences of the events are so wide-ranging. I stayed up much too late to finish.

I am sorry that the story has come to an end. While Murderbot will always be my favourite series by Martha Wells, this one will stay in a solid second place. I enjoyed these books so much and will be reading them time and time again. I am looking forward to choosing another Martha Wells series to read this year.

Excellent Conclusion

Much as I’d love to keep reading more, I admit this is a fantastic conclusion to the series. I especially loved that we got more POVs than just Moon’s. All my favorites on one last wild adventure. Perfect finale. Loved every minute.

An amazing book and series; this is true fantasy! Incredible world-building and story-telling, with engaging adventures and stories! Everyone should read these books. I hope that Martha Wells returns to this series one day, as I would hate to miss out on more adventures with the Raksura.

Interesting twists and turns in this latest installment of The Books of the Raksura!

I very much liked this installment in the continuing adventures of the consort Moon and his friends! The story starts off with Moon enjoying domestic bliss. But things are never easy for him, and he's forced to choose between staying with his clutch or venturing back out into the world to head off trouble that could be truly catastrophic. Moon makes new groundling friends, travels new lands, and gets into dire scrapes (again)! We get more glimpses into the long vanished Forunner civilization, and discover that they had friends and allies in an equally vanished civilization. The interactions between the Raksuran queens are especially fun in this story. If you liked the previous installments of this series, then there's no reason to stop now!
