Consider This: Charlotte Mason and the Classical Tradition by Karen Glass

This book seemed to be an analysis of Charlotte Mason's works and the author firmly stated that they would not be discussing the method...which was why I purchased the book. This was on me -- I should have spent some time with the book before checking it out.

I loved this book! I've been exploring different teaching philosophies and found myself more and more interested in the Charlotte Mason method so I was glad when my homeschool book club picked this book to read. I loved everything in here; it all made so much sense and sounded exactly how I picture the homeschooling experience for my children. I now plan on reading The Original Homeschooling Series by Charlotte Mason to become even better acquainted with her philosophy and ideas so that I can put them to use in my own home.

Excellent. I abused the Kindle highlighting feature and highlighted half the book.

Spent a bunch of time condensing notes into a review, then the file got stuck when the wifi and USB drive broke on my laptop. But the screen still works, so I took pictures with my phone and used an image-to-text macro. That mostly worked, but it still needs reformatting and the occasional dropped letter re-added.

So, uh, review to come.

Excellent!

Consider This is probably the best book on education I’ve read. It explains Charlotte Mason and classical education in a way that is understandable and compelling. I found the discussion on analytical and synthetic teaching the most fascinating.

Loved this book. It taught me so much about classical education and led me to a greater appreciation of Charlotte Mason's methods as a means to classically educating my children.

If you are interested in Charlotte Mason, classical education, homeschooling, or just education in general then read this book. It’s a synthetic approach to learning what classical education actually was (vs. the modern interpretation of it) and how Charlotte Mason used it to educate her students and teachers. We need to not simply replicate what the classical educators were doing but think about why they did what they did and how we can achieve the same goals in our modern setting. It’s not simply about learning Latin and studying grammar, logic, and rhetoric. It is a whole approach to learning that involves absolute truth, virtue, and learning as a lifestyle. This book has given me a much greater understanding of Charlotte Mason and the classical tradition her educational principles spring from.
