I usually don’t gravitate towards self-help books, but a friend said she enjoyed reading this one and I thought I would give it a try! The title is a little silly, but the contents of this book are very genuine and uplifting. I didn’t really find anything mind-blowing or particularly new in this book (partly because it was published almost 100 years ago and I have a feeling the author’s teachings have already been integrated into our society) but it served as a nice reminder of how to be sincere in working with people. At first I was a turned off by his “people-pleasing” tactics because I personally am trying to break that habit myself. But after continuing to read I found some really nice little statements that could help really anyone connect with the people around them in a sincere way. The writing is easy to understand with TONS of historical and personal antidotes (some are very over the top but I liked a few of them). I recommend treating this book like a workbook while reading and marking ideas that you like or resonate with- it made it fun to read!

Nothing terribly surprising or revolutionary, but still a solid resource for being social

Non capisco perché io mi ostini a provare a leggere libri di self help quando poi ogni volta li trovo noiosi, per quanto possano essere fatti bene (come in questo caso).

Look, is this sort of a book for sociopaths? Sure. Does it have a lot of dated references and examples that will make you say, Hmm...? Of course. But is it also mostly good advice on how to interact with people in a friendlier, kinder, and more productive way? Yeah, actually.

I think the version I listened to was the 1981 update (some 25 years after the death of the author) that apparently removed some sections like one full of marital advice and also wedged in some "updated" examples. Without looking into it, I'm going to say removing "Seven Rules for Making Your Home Life Happier" was probably for the best since I can't imagine there was much there that wouldn't make me angry. However, even the small amount of updating meant it was a little jarring to hear a random reference to 1970s Stevie Wonder from a book whose author died in 1955. Most of the examples are more in the era of Teddy Roosevelt.

I can't overly fault a book that encourages being nice to people, considering other people's opinions, and trying to get along better though. It's certainly a problem if you're an adult reading this and it's the first time you've ever thought of behaving like a nice person, but it's not a fatal book flaw to be explicitly reminded to not be a jerk if you don't want people to hate you.

mi aspettavo forse un po’ di più, è davvero bello e con molti consigli utili per la vita ma mi ha un po’ annoiato

The 1930s were a great decade for self help books. This is probably the one I'd recommend to those who are having trouble reading the room or getting what they need. It's a neat bit of social engineering, and it walks the line in between selfish manipulation and good-hearted handling very nicely.

This book was originally recommended to me by my mother. She has said repeatedly over the years that most of my problems ought to be solved by this one title. Though that is a grandiose claim, after completing Carnegie's masterpiece I do not disagree. This easy-to-read advice book taught me a lot about interpersonal relations and how to make the most of each interaction.

I liked his conversational tone and the pace/rhythm that the collection of stories builds up. At the end I whittled down the major lessons and will take those ideas with me throughout life. I hope that this book shows me how to be a better friend and communicator.

I liked it, and will probably reread it sometime. It also reminded me of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
