Ehhh. I bought it as a light read, because the trailer for the new Apple show wouldn't stop stalking me. The book was fair enough of a read. It kept you attentive and the writing was good. I suspect it was more of a 'me' problem than a 'you' problem, because I tend to get bored with reading realistic fiction. Something that may support this point is that after reading it, I watched the show.

I do want to say that I LOVED the show and thought it was incredibly well-acted. I think the acting managed to give sympathy and credibility where the book sometimes failed, as you saw more perspectives than just Andy's.

This is a tough one. What I hated about it, I think I was supposed to hate, I think that was success by Landay here.

We have a 14 year old boy who's been murdered in the park. The assistant DA (Andy Barber) is assigned and he has a local man in his sights as the guy to pursue who is a known child molester.
Then the case gets turned upside down and the DA's son Jacob is now the #1 suspect.

Chaos ensues in the Barber household, Andy is put on paid leave and Jacob is arrested and charged with the murder. The book then follows Jacob and his family through the trial. We go to all of the court days, hear all of the testimony, we are just as in the dark as every juror, we have to make our own conclusion on if Jacob is guilty or not.

This story is truly not about 'who done it' but it is about the harsh reality of Jacob and his family as they struggle throughout the trial. Did Jacob really kill this boy? How far do you go to defend your child, how much do you ignore any warning signs or make excuses for your child.

There are many twists toward the end of the story that continue to keep you guessing as to what really happened that day, what happened later, what could happen in the future.

This book still has me thinking days after I've finished reading it.

While I hated parts of it and wanted to just yell at this family many times, I think that was the point, so I will call this successful.

If you enjoy a courtroom drama and family drama this story is for you.

I found it was really slow to start and had to force myself to keep reading for the first 1/3rd of the book, but it got super interesting after that. I was very surprised by the twists at the end! I really enjoyed it.

2.5* rounded up

I was a bit confused throughout the story and had to re-read chapters however once I got the use to the author’s writing style, I was able to get into the story. Very sad but also keeps you thinking even after reading it.
