I loved Little Women back in the day and thought this couldn’t possibly compare but it was brilliant. It was so good to visualise the predominantly saintly Marches in a more human light. Particularly Marmee ... and the story of the absent father was riveting. I read the whole book in a day.

Interesting take - the story of Mr. March from Little Women during the year he spent with the Union Army. Some of it is based on the life of Louisa May Alcott's father, Bronson Alcott. It's quite a feat of imagination and a good read.

Loved this book, while I'm not entirely convinced Part 2 was needed I liked how Brooks made Alcott's somewhat overlooked characters of Mr. and Mrs. March real.

Sadly. I’m not going to spend anymore time reading this book. I gave it three stars because of the terrific writing that makes you feel as though you’re there in history watching the story unfold in real time. Otherwise, I’d give it 2 stars. Mr March comes across to me as a complete buffoon. He’s just not likable. Sorry.
