I was really impressed with Virginia Boecker's prose. It was engaging, so even when there was a lull in the plot or action, I was still interested in the story!
I freaking loved George! He cracked me up! I was really hoping in the beginning that he was going to be the love interest. (*sighs wistfully*) I also really liked Fifer! She was feisty, and even though she came off as a hard ass (or worse), she totally won me over by the end of the book. You come to realize that she acts tough, but she has good intentions (not to mention spunk in bounds)! I actually kind of wish that Fifer and George had been the main characters! Elizabeth and John were kind of just there for me, though. I wasn't really sold on their romance because I was too focused on George, haha.
The major complaint I have with this book is that I didn't connect as well as I'd hoped. It lacked the feeling for me that I was hoping for. Which is sad, because it really was a great story! I loved the world that Boecker painted, concept was cool! Fifer's knots were totally awesome, and so was the explanation of the symbol (the front cover)!
I don't have much else to say about this book other than I enjoyed it and that you should read it, too!

I went to Barnes and Noble the other day, looking for a few new books that I couldn't find at the library. I saw this book on Goodreads and wanted to read it. While at Barnes and Noble, I didn't see this book and almost got something else. Then, just as I was about to go pay for my books, I saw this book randomly amongst several other books that have nothing in common with this one, on a shelf I wasn't even looking at. As soon as I saw it, I picked it up and put one of the other ones back (I'll be back for it later).
I was in the middle of another book when I got this one, so I finished it up real quickly and started reading this. That was just yesterday. When I like a book, I'll finish it in a day or so. If I don't like a book, it takes weeks for me to read it. As you can probably guess, any assigned reading for school can be difficult for me.
This book started pretty fast. You jump right into a part of a witch hunt, which is pretty cool in its own right. There was no waiting for this book to warm up; it started off right in the middle of the action. It didn't take long for something to go awry and the main character, Elizabeth, to be thrown in jail and waiting there to go to execution. Alright, as you can guess, she didn't die. No, the most famously dangerous wizard in their land comes and saves her, offering help if she helps him in return. At first, she doesn't want to trust them, but she warm us and makes friends. Throughout the book, her character changes based on the experiences she has. She isn't one of those characters to whine and complain about what she once had and how bad what she has had become. In some ways, she looks back and sees that even the crap she's going through doesn't compare to some of the things that happened to her when she was younger, like what she experienced when her parents died and her friend Caleb found her.
One thing I didn't like, was Caleb. He was supposed to be her best friend, like her only family. He tells her he's coming back to get her...he never comes.
Spoiler
Later in the story, he claims he was coming back, but, by that time, Elizabeth doesn't want to hear it. She has new friends and wants to protect them as much as she wants to protect herself.Spoiler
Later on, Caleb decides that witch hunting and making sure Blackwell is happy is more important than saving his friend's life. Again, what the heck? Of course, that's when Elizabeth has to make a life or death decision and Caleb got what (in my opinion) he really deservedWhen I got through this, five minutes ago, I was like 'Yay! Finally a book I was looking forward to actually ended up being good!' It wasn't perfect (I usually only rate five stars to the books that surprised the heck out of me so much I read them again and ended up liking just as much, if not more, as the first time) This one was on the edge, but I found myself shying away from that last star at the end. Anyway, best book in a while.
:)
I really wanted to like this book. I was seeing rave reviews for it everywhere, and it sounded like something that I would be really interested in. Unfortunately, I found this book to be uninteresting and unengaging.
The magic in what I read was unexplained and underdeveloped, with no reason, logical or otherwise, for the ban on magic. It is possible that this would have been expanded upon later in the book had I gotten to that point, but I didn't and I feel like some explanation should have been presented in the eighty pages that I read.
The main character, Elizabeth, is what really killed the book for me. The only thing that prevented her from having pretty much no personality was the fact that she was absolutely, incredibly annoying. She is totally obsessed with her witch hunting partner, Caleb, but we never get any reasoning as to why this is, and we don't see enough of him to appreciate her affections. She's judgemental, hypocritical, selfish, shallow, and incredibly set in her beliefs and resistant to change.
The writing was decent enough, and I may have enjoyed it in another context, but the story wasn't interesting enough for the writing to carry it just on its own. I might pick up another book by Virginia Boecker if the plot interests me enough, but it'll take a lot to persuade me to do that.
It lost the magic. Maybe I'll try to re-read later...
The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker (YA)
This was a good paranormal, young adult book. Elizabeth is a witch hunter...which is exactly as it sounds. She is then found with witch's herbs in her possession and jailed as a witch. Nicholas, a famous wizard, rescues her in the hopes that she will be able to fulfill a prophecy that might save his life. Will she? This book was a good, quick read. It had elements of suspense, humor and romance. I enjoyed it. I received a copy of this book from the Amazon Vine program in exchange for a honest review.

Let me start with this: I REALLY wanted to like this book. The premise was great. The cover is beautiful. Magic? Check. Fighting? Check. Romance? Check. This book had the potential to blow me away. But it didn't. And I can't pinpoint why. Maybe it was because I had my hopes set so high. Maybe it was cause the characters are stock characters at heart. Whatever it was, it left me in a disappointed slump, wanting something more. I'll still read the rest of the series, but from now on, I won't expect as much out of this author.
