I don't even know where to start with this. Basically everything about this book gives me a headache and I was not happy that my bookclub wants to go on to read the second part of this series.
Frankly, it is absolutely beyond me how this thing got printed or what kind of intern waved this through on what I'm assuming was their first day of reading books. Maybe they didn't even read it, maybe they just did a keyword search.
I'm a teacher, I know what the first thing that anybody ever writes is extremely similar to this book, but that's why usually, my seventh grader's creative writing assignments are not printed as novels. This is the one that got away, apparently, and how inspiring it must be to people who are intimidated by the prospect of writing because the other books are so well thought-out and so well-written.
This novel really does read like someone's first attempt at writing.
Someone who has never read anything before.
Someone who has not interacted with a lot of people before and has trouble gauging of how people behave in different situations.
Someone who technically knows that things were different in the past and just figured they'd go and write a quasi-historical novel without doing research on... anything that happened in the time period the book is supposedly set in.
Or how historical periods worked.
Or how witch hunting worked.
Or how to look up dates.
Or how to plot.
Apart from plants! This book is surprisingly good about plants, even fictional ones. I was really impressed about that. The ones I knew were spot on or at least were used on the same bodypart, the two I had to look up were spot on, too.
In the end I only made it through this novel by speedreading the thing and skipping passages when I could not take it anymore, so I am very sure that there are things that I missed, but I just... couldn't. I gave it my best.

Omg this was so goooood! This book blew me away, i couldn't think about anything else. The characters are great and have more to them than that meets the eyes. I loved it! I don't know why i didn't pick it up sooner, this book has been standing on my shelf since the summer when i was in London. And now i have to wait until July for the next book! Zum Schreibstil
Sehr einfach, flüssig, guter Jugendbuchstandart. Da ich ein unkorrigiertes Leseexemplar hatte, könnte es allerdings sein, dass die endgültige Version noch besser ausgefallen ist. Darum möchte ich da nicht zu sehr urteilen.
Über die Charaktere
Elisabeth ist eine Taffe junge Frau die in ihrem Leben schon vieles erlebt und gesehen hat. Aber genau das hat sie zu der gemacht die sie ist und die mochte ich sehr gerne. Ich fand ihre Entwicklung extrem schön und freue mich riesig für sie! Das hat sie echt verdient! Gerne hätte ich aber mehr aus ihrer Vergangenheit erfahren. Auch ihre Erfahrung mit dem König wurden meiner Meinung nach zu wenig behandelt. Hat sie da nicht Schäden davongetragen? Andere Mädchen sind schon bei weit weniger traumatisiert.
John ist natürlich ein Traumprinz schlechthin! Sympathisch, süß und mit verstrubelten Haaren (da hatte mich Frau Boecker bereits!) ich fand ihn toll! Er ist gut, hilfsbereit und überaus talentiert. Aber gleichzeitig auch ein ganz normaler junge.
Am meisten mochte ich George! Schon bei seinem ersten Auftritt war er mein Liebling! Schade dass er keine größeren Auftritte hatte. Er ist witzig, fröhlich, frisch und bunt! Ich hoffe, im zweiten Band wird er eine größere Rolle bekommen!
Ich mochte auch Fifer und Skyler sehr, sehr gerne. Ein Spin off der beiden könnte ich mir sehr gut vorstellen! (Liebe Frau Autorin! Erhören sie mich!)
Einzig, Caleb war mir von Anfang an richtig unsympathisch!
Persönliche Meinung
Mega toll! Das Buch hat mich einfach gefesselt und erst nach beenden wieder losgelassen. (gezwungener Masen, muss jetzt auf die Fortsetzung warten) Es ließ sich so gut lesen, war durchgehen spannend, die Charaktere waren mir echt sympathisch, die Geschichte ist gut. Ich mag Hexen, ich mag Mittelalter und genau das bekommt man in diesem Buch. Ich fühlte mich echt in diese Welt hineinversetzt. Sehr toll!
Es ist für mich keine Meisterleistung oder ein unbedingtes MUST READ (wie z.B. Die Luna Chroniken, Dark Elements und Throne of Glass) aber ein super Fantasy Jugendbuch, welches ich gerne empfehlen werde!

This is a totally fun to read young adult paranormal romance! Set in the 1500s, Elizabeth Grey is a witch hunter. Her parents died of the plague when she was 11 years old and a boy named Caleb took her under his wing and together they were trained to be witch hunters. When Elizabeth is accused of witchcraft herself and put in prison, she is rescued by people working for Nicholas Perevil, the most powerful wizard in the kingdom, because she has been designated in a prophesy. There is action, magic, betrayal, love and more action in this fun first book in what promises to be a fabulous series! I look forward to reading the next book.
