Review to followThe IQ series of books by Joe Ide are amongst my favorite series and the latest book in this series, Hi Five stand up to the strength of this series.

Isiah and Dobson are up to their old and new tricks in an attempt to help as many as they can while remaining alive themselves. Set to a great city, backdrop with atmospheric prose and cinematic writing, Hi Five is one of my favorites in this series.

I received an advanced review copy of this audiobook from the publisher, via NetGalley, for my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I remain a huge fan of IQ, of Dodson, of Dorinda, and all of the supporting characters in this series.

This was one of those books where I thought this plot mechanism might kill me - multiple personalities? But it was good! I liked it, the story was once again heartwarming in a weird way, and I found the end satisfying.

This book wasn’t as great as the others in the series. It was a fine addition to the series but felt slow and didn’t really focus enough on the case he was trying to solve.

Having not read any of the other books in the series I was a bit wary of starting this one but I’d seen it could be read as a standalone book. I found the book to be pretty chaotic and there was just too much going on. Some of the themes got repetitive too which was a shame as I loved the idea of this series. Towards the end of the book I could see how it was gearing up for the next one. This one just feels like a chaotic gap. I’d love to read the series from the start and see if my review was different.

The scale of this was beyond what I was interested in. There’s an arms dealer, Nazis, gang warfare. There’s a mentally ill person who’s mistreated. It wasn’t IQ solving hood crimes, which is what set this series apart, and the funny moments were almost nonexistent. It wasn’t terrible, and the characters are as likable as ever, but I’m not feeling compelled to read the next book.

This is the fourth book of the IQ series and the only series I actively read. I love the characters that Ide creates and the dialog is always, always top shelf. I started reading this when it came out several months ago, but was dismayed that the audio book narration (which had been the best narrated books in audible) was done by someone not named Sullivan Jones. The new narrator, Zeno Robinson, was not as good as Jones so I left the book, only to pick it up months later this time without narration.

I know it sounds petty... But Sullivan Jones is just that good.

The plot is absurd and hard to follow initially, with the story's central victim being someone with five multiple personalities. She's not a likable character, and neither are her personalities. The scenes with her were frustrating. Luckily the entire book isn't about her, and every other scene was better. There's a lot of world building in "Hi-Five" that was not evident as much in the previous entries. The subplot with TK and Gloria was an unusual route to take, but not necessarily an unwelcome one.

As someone who does not read series (because I feel obligated to finish all 87 entries) I have nonetheless been enticed ever since Ide wrote IQ and have been a faithful follower to each entry since. He is a favorite author, an inspiration, and someone who, hopefully, I can be as cool as one day.
