I have officially given up and DNF'd my 3rd book of 2024. It's no one's fault but my own. 2/3 I KNEW I didn't care for well before I started them, but since they were included in a series I already pushed thru months prior, I had the delusional thought one day of "meh, why not?"
... I knew why not. I knew.
Reasons?
The first 3 were okay. They were fine. The plot was... Somewhere. The spice was the only thing holding this book together but the fmc was insufferable. It shouldn't take you 3 books to gain any ounce of character growth. Idk why I thought this fmc would be any different. She's actually worse. And Sorin isn't much better. Half way thru, there's also no spice for me to even have that to hang onto

Overall enjoyed this book and the series, but it was a bit of a surprise for the book to be from Thalia and Sorin's perspective.
I wasn't as connected with them as the leads as I was with Adara and Evren.

I was so thrilled to get the arc from Holly Renee that brought me back to the Stars and Shadows world. While we got glimpses of Thalia and Sorin in the other 3 books, it was fantastic to read a book that was devoted to their relationship.
We all knew that Sorin and Thalia were both bad@sses, but we did not get the opportunity to know what their internal struggles were. Thalia stays closed off because of her tragic past and the loss of Jorah. She has experienced so much loss that she feels that any more will break her completely. Because of this, she shuts out Sorin and tries to ignore how she feels. Sorin wears his feelings for all to see, but he can not break through Thalia’s daytime mask. When they both find themselves on a mission that can threaten everyone they love, they have to try to hide their feelings to do their duty.
I love that we get to see the swoonworthy side of Sorin. He is passionate, protective, and will burn down the world for Thalia. Thalia still wears her internal scars almost as visibly as her external ones. She tries to mask her pain when she is around her loved ones, but Sorin grounds her. He is her anchor, and she is his. But they have to fight for it. It’s a good thing they are both warriors. What Thalia hides is that she will burn everything for the people she loves as well, including Sorin. This book strips away Thalia’s mask as she has to realize what is worth fighting for. Thalia and Sorin are as meant for each other as Evren and Adara. This is a perfect end for this series!

I loved the other books in this series, and it disappoints me that this one was not up to par with the other books.
Full disclosure, I didn't read the description of the book before I began reading it, and I just assumed that it would be about Evren and Adara, the main characters in books 1-3. This one though, is about the other Starblessed character, Thalia. Honestly, this book gave me [b:The Selection|10507293|The Selection (The Selection, #1)|Kiera Cass|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1322103400l/10507293._SY75_.jpg|15413183] vibes, and I didn't really like it. To me, it wasn't clear why it was necessary for her to take part in this "undercover" mission.
It seems like this book was simply written to stir up interest in the series once more after book 3 was released.
2/5 stars.
