I had been waiting to read this book because I thought it was going to be the last of the Mercy Thompson series, but I got to the end and found out there will be another one!! Woo! Seriously, Mercy is one of my top fav heroines and I would have been sad to lose her.
This book can't be called the best of the series but there was some good plot development. Mercy gets kidnapped out of her werewolf pack in Washington state and taken to the most powerful vampire, in Europe. She (because she is awesome and able to shape shift into a coyote) frees herself pretty quickly and then she's on the run, naked with no money and in coyote form. So most of the book is split between her point of view in Prague, trying to avoid vampires and navigate politics with the local werewolf pack, and the point of view of her mate, alpha of the Washington State pack and my personal fav literary werewolf hottie. He is busy trying to track her down, then when he gets to where Mercy was kidnapped to and the big bad vamp's place, he's busy negotiating and posturing with an entourage of vampires, goblins, werewolves, and one badass old Russian witch. They've created a "safe zone" for supernaturals and humans back in Washington, and the old bad vampire... just doesn't get how it works? So he kidnapped Mercy to make Adam come to him and explain it, and see if he's powerful enough to enforce the safe zone? It's a bit of a weak plot. Best parts were just getting more of the "good guy" vampire characters' backstory, getting to read Mercy's interactions with people, and one tiny plot twist I fully appreciated;
So there's this one werewolf, Bran, who I think was the first werewolf or something. He got cranky for a few centuries and inspired one of the monsters in the epic poem Beowulf. That old and powerful. He now is the Alpha of Alpha's of the Northern America packs. And he was Mercy's father-substitute.
When Mercy was kidnapped and the whole entourage was put together for the diplomatic rescue mission, there was a werewolf co-pilot whose name was Matthew Smith (not the Doctor). And that's exactly how the book listed the character. Every time it was his point of view and the chapter had his name at the top it was "Matt Smith (Not the Doctor)" which is a reference to the greatest sci-fi show currently on air and my favorite Doctor Who actor! Well the book's characters love the show too so they're all making references to how funny his name is.
At the very end it's revealed that this Matt Smith was Bran in disguise the whole time, who couldn't publicly rescue Mercy because politics, but he took the name Matt Smith because he and Mercy like Doctor Who. I'm sure its super obvious but I didn't see that coming and had to sit there for 5 minutes remembering everything "Matt Smith" said and did and how totally different it comes off if BRAN said them.
Anyway, I enjoyed the book but was a little disappointed it wasn't more exciting in plot content. Bit of a let down after the epic battle with a volcano god in the last book.

I have to wait a whole year for the next book! How will I ever survive?!?!

I really liked this one! May be one of my favorites!

It has Mercy kind of on her own, and I very much love her having to think on her feet and do stuff by herself. It feels very classic Mercy Thompson lol

I also love that we get more Honey and even Marcillia outside of Mercy's kind of judgy viewpoint...although in the end they don't do much at least they have more screentime which is awesome.

We also kind of get a connection to Zac... a new submissive wolf that showed up (kind of out of nowhere) a few books ago. I kinda wish he had more of a role here though...like this would have been the perfect opportunity! Instead, he continiues to be on the edges and still leaves me wondering why we had to introduce him instead of fleshing out some of the wolves we already know...

Still it's a good book. Pls more like this.

As always, any book from these series is good. I almost missed that is was released, thank god that I follow Patricia on FB. Officially, my break from reading that started two months ago, is now over. Can't wait for the next one. I will not get in to details of why I enjoyed the book because if you are familiar with the series you will know the reason.
