Silence Fallen

4.26 AVERAGE

adventurous medium-paced

This was another Mercy on vacation side quest story. This time it's a forced European holiday with vampires.

I'm still enjoying these books for inexplicable reasons, especially given how cringe this one was. The chapter epigraphs deserved every disdainful chuckle and eye roll I gave them. The split timeline that converges at the climax was almost funny for how haphazardly it was assembled. And somehow, despite it all, I still like it.

I really enjoyed it, although the story was a bit predictable.

I've often felt that the Mercy Thompson books take a while to get going, but Silence Fallen is the opposite, the action starts right away. Unfortunately, the pace slows significantly as the story progresses to the point where it becomes a bit dull (hence the rating below 4 stars). I really enjoyed the European setting and actually recognised some of the street and building descriptions. It was also amusing when Mercy noted that most of Europe speaks British English. The ending isn't as strong as the beginning, but I was intrigued by the introduction of Larry the Goblin King and want to learn more about him.

I love Mercy and her mismatched pack of friends and family. Fast-paced, well-written, and fun. Urban fantasy when it's at its best.
