Read my review of The Fourth Bear.

Another great one from Fforde. I was pleasantly surprised with the different plot structure in this sequel compared to the first book. There's really no repetitiveness to speak of in terms of chapter or beat format. Although there were an inordinate amount of threads brought to proper closure in the end, I would have liked for a few to be more fully explained, like Caliban or how Spratt's status as a PDR affects his actions. I did like the more common (at least it seemed that way) winks and sprinklings of metafiction dialogue. I also found the reinterpretation of the original nursery rhyme more ingenious in this one than The Big Over Easy. Super fun read.

As expected, Jasper Fforde killed it with this sequel. I am saddened that there won’t be a third installation, but I greatly look forward to reading everything else he has written. The Ashleigh/Mary development was actually pretty heartwarming, and my favorite part of the whole book.

On par with The Big Over Easy, this is insane, fabulous, and wonderful.

I loved this book, it was so funny I wish there were more in the series.

I am a sucker for these books. Fantasy, mystery, fables, and fairy tales. Put them in a blender. Drop in some humor and a touch of alien. Bam a great read for anyone who is a sucker (that would be me). I know Thursday Next is his big series but I love these books more.

This NCD mystery has a lot more hardcore detective work in it. I always enjoy Fforde’s books because there is no way I will ever be able to figure out the ending before it actually happens (and sometimes even then…). He is such a creative writer, both in allusions and plots. I don’t think I’ve ever come across an author so well-versed in not only literature (the Thursday Next books) but nursery rhymes as well. If you’re a bookworm, bibliophile, or any other type of voracious reader, I highly recommend either of Jasper Fforde’s series.

There’s nobody like Jasper Fforde for melting the line between reality and literature…or in this case nursery rhymes. He writes intelligently and hilariously and I still giggle to myself thinking of the line from this book, “a dog doing press ups with an ant in attendance”. This particular book I thought was 50-100 pages too long, which made it drag a little in places.
