I absolutely adore this play! “ hell is empty and all of the devils are here” is just a perfect line! I really do love everything about this play and think the language is wonderful, it reads so nicely and fluently and you can visualise everything that is going on. Prospero and Ariel are very interesting characters and I love the dynamics between the supernatural and the mundane characters. I would recommend this to anyone interested in Shakespeare.

The Tempest still remains one of the plays I don’t entirely like and I don’t know why; it also felt super short and not as developed as I thought

We are such stuff As dreams are made on; and our little life Is rounded with sleep.

I thought this play was a little strange with the spirits and magic that Prospero wielded.

A couple themes I picked up on were class differences between royalty and servants and forgiveness on the part of Prospero. He had every right to come down hard on the usurpers of his dukedom but he was forgiving in the end.

Just by the name of the play, I was led to think that this would be another of the author's great tragedies but it is neither a tragedy or a comedy. I wouldn't call it overly romantic either... but has the feel of the saying “all's well that ends well”. Aside from the entertainment value this work appears to be about making choices. Although in not all instances humans have a choice to make in this play the lead character does. He has the means to revenge the people who have erred against him in the past or he can release them. Conscience rules the day and all ends on a good note. Nicely done I really enjoyed this play.

This is a three-maybe-four stars because I had to use Wikipedia to figure out what exactly was going on. Then I'm like "They got all of that out of this?" So yeah, I think I'd need multiple rereads and actual studying (ick) to really understand what was going on. But it had three to four star potential ;)
