I am glad for the scene by scene explanation, for 20 years I've been out of high school and my Shakespeare is rusty. I did enjoy it almost as much as a modern novel. I wish there could have been a little more between Miranda and Ferdinand though, if you know what I mean!

I'm weirdly confused as to what this was about. Either I missed a big chunk of text or I simply didn't understand more subtle passages or backgrounds.
The ending comes really abruptly, and is kind of unsatisfying when one is expecting the sort of ending one finds in many of Shakespeare's works, where everyone is either married or dead by the end. This play however, ends almost as if it must have a sequel; the exposition is taken care of, but there's little real conflict, and the ending reads more as the base of a narrative arc, as if there is certainly more to follow.
I finished it with the feeling that The Tempest would be a whole different play the next time I read it.

The Tempest is a visionary comedy much like A Midsummer Nights Dream. This play strongly suggests Shakespeare used psychedelics. The plot is thin, images are far from reality, non-human beings are created, and characters leave the experience unharmed with changed perspectives.
This was honestly one of my favorite Shakespeare plays I have read. It is extremely comical and very well-paced. It had a very whole-hearted ending and I'm happy that Shakespeare had an actual hero as his protagonist for once. Prospero is a decent man. He doesn't kill anyone, no matter how much they wronged him. Stayed loyal and true to Gonzalo for helping him that one night on the boat. He kept his word to Ariel. He even let Ferdinand live and marry his daughter. I'm surprised he didn't retaliate more on Antonio but I think that just goes to show how good of a guy he is. He used his magic for good, to get back what once was his and what he deserved.

The theatre where I work as an usher is soon having a production of The Tempest, in its latest French translation. I wanted to refresh my memory before that, having read this play a few years ago. As with MacBeth that I read last year, I can’t say I understood most of it because of the language, but I understood enough to be sad for Caliban and to hate the insta-love between Miranda and Ferdinand. I still really enjoy the character of Ariel, though, that hasn’t changed, and I’m really looking forward to seeing this play performed on stage (and in French !).
