The acerbic anti-heroine has one of the most enjoyable narrative voices I've read in ages. Also, it's funny. I like funny.

4.5 STARS!!
“God kills indiscriminately. Why can’t I?”
Say hello to one of my favorite YA heroines, Andromeda "Meda" Melange. She eats souls, not because she wants them, but she needs them to live. But don't worry, she eats souls of bad people.
I eat souls. Without them, I die.
After the death of her mother, she wanders in North Carolina to try to find some truths about her since she doesn't really know anything about herself except for the fact that she eats souls. And that she has superhuman strength and speed. But after killing a hospital nurse in a mental health facility, she finds herself face to face with her kind. Kinda. She's a halfling after all, though I'm pretty sure it's obvious in her last name. If you speak French that is. As it turns out, she was half-demon. They might have gotten her if the Templars, people who fight demons, didn't arrive. They save her, thinking that she was a Beacon, people who make the world a better place.
He thinks I’m a Beacon. I look down to hide my twinkling eyes. Bad day or not, that’s hilarious..
She continues to lie about herself but as she delves more into the Templar's world, she discovers that she's not exactly what she actually thinks she is.

One of the things that I love about Meda is that she's not one of those YA heroines who think that just because they can mean they should. She's a fucking liar. She saves her own skin first.
A daring, death-defying quest to retrieve the Holy Spreadsheet from a battlefield of Good versus Evil, this sounds like a job for…
Someone else.
Fortunately, I picked up a pack of self-sacrificing lunatics who see no problem with that.
But she's also a good friend. I think.
“What an asshole. He almost died!”
“Yeah, asshole.”
She turns on me, eyes narrow. Her bullshit-o-meter must have alerted her to my lack of sincerity and I’m in imminent danger of replacing the tree as her punching bag.
I scramble. “Don’t look at me that way. I totally would have let you die.”.
Added bonus, there's no insta-love, no love triangle, square or whatever that makes you want to skin the heroine alive.

Overall, I had a lot of fun reading this story. I couldn't stop grinning until I literally had to take a break because my cheeks started to hurt. When Meda manifested signs of craziness in the mental facility,
I hear myself laughing, screeching, cackling. The world is red hot and pulsing. On fire..
I knew I would love her. Ah, if only the world had more YA heroines like her. Heroines that you could totally relate to. No more "I have what it takes to save the world therefore I should do it" bullshits. Though, a part of me is curious how it would go if she falls in love. I'm pretty sure it will happen on the next book, or not.

3.5 Fun adventure

Meda. Is. Amazing.

What is it with me loving anti-heros so much theese days? I thought I was Team Good all the way. Oh well.

I think this is the most sarcastic book I've read in a long time, which I adore. Meda's voice is hilarious and so damn interesting. I love how she sees the world and being there while she changed for the best and allowed people to get under her skin and inside her little heart was fascinating.

I liked the whole Demon vs. Crusaders thingy way more then I thought I would!

Chi and Jo are OTP and Jo is hands down the best character. Though, maybe Uri comes aaalmost close?

Anyways, this was fun and entertaining and I'm curious to see where the story goes!

BEST.
BOOK.
EVER.

When I come across any scenario involving demons or demon slaying, my mind automatically wanders to this.

I can't help it. It's an affliction. Similarly, Meda (our main), can't help what she is. Born half demon, she is an eater of souls. She isn't the complete epitome of evil, only chowing down on people that are bad. She walks in a grey area between good and evil.

Meda is a snarky, self serving, not giving a flying fuck about anyone else, bitch. If she does have a beating heart, it's encased in a foot of ice, surrounded by barbed wire, complete with a moat filled with man-eating crocodiles. She does what she needs to do, for numero uno. You will either love her or loathe her. My inner bitch adored her.

Through a series of rather coincidental events, Meda winds up inserting herself in a crew of Templars. These guys hunt and kill demons. They have no clue that they've allowed a snake into their midst. Meda does this to discover more about herself, what makes her tick, why she is what she is. She doesn't really care about any of her motley crew, and often inwardly debates keeping them alive or cracking their bodies open and sucking them dry.

All the supporting characters are rather likable. Chi, the "hero", not the sharpest tool in the shed. Jo, also a snarky bitch for her own valid reasons, and Uri. Uri, the youngest of the group. I loved that kid.

Cracked takes us on a journey to discover the difference between good and evil, and what really makes someone human.

Recommended for those who enjoy their books with a side of blood and the occasional demon decapitation. Try it, you may like it. I swear this on a plate of cookies.

3.5 Chocolate chip cookie stars

(Thank you to Ms. Crewe and NetGalley for the arc. No cookies were given to me in exchange for an honest review.)

Meda's voice was fresh and this story was rather novel and different. Recommend!

I received a physical copy of this book from the publishers in exchange for an honest review.

I am all for debut authors and when I got the e-mail from the publishers with the opportunity to read Eliza Crewe's new book, I jumped at the chance. I hadn't heard of any book that featured the power to eat souls until this little gem. I was intrigued. Not to mention the absolutely gorgeous cover. As I have been in sort of a romance novel bubble recently I wanted to get into something that didn't have a whole lot of that aspect. This one book was just the ticket.

Meda struggles with her moral compass her entire life. She is forced to eat souls to stay alive, but her choice in victims is all her own. Meda took from her mother's teachings that if she had to eat, might as well eat the souls of bad people instead of good. So that is exactly what Meda does. While tracking down the murderer of a ghost she has come in contact with, she comes face-to-face with something she never imagined possible. Men who were the same as her. Soul-eaters. And they called themselves demons.

With the assistance of a heroic crusader, Chi, Meda starts to piece together her existence as a half demon. Chi, of course, is not privy to Meda's family heritage and thinks her to be a supremely good person that the demons want to kill because she has a path in life to do good. How far from the truth could the boy be? Meda seizes the opportunity and convinces Chi and his friends Uri and Jo to take her back to their crusader homestead. Her idea is to gather intelligence on her enemies and escape before anyone is the wiser. Little does she know that her story is deeper than that and just because she is part demon does not mean she is heartless.

I enjoyed Cracked. It was an interesting world and an even more enthralling character base. We have all seen the battle between good and evil in numerous books, some of those are even between humans and demons such as in this one. What we don't normally see is what would come of the pinnacle of evil producing a child with a soldier of good. Where would the child's loyalties lie? In evil or good? If raised good will the child become good or is their nature too ingrained in them to even bother? I have always loved the nature vs. nurture theories and this book took it to a whole new level.

Cracked is a page turning read of good versus evil where good AND the bad are both in the shape of a clueless half-demon.

I am a sucker for fantasy, action YA book with a kick ass heroine, so this book was definitely on my TBR list. I am so glad I came across this book and met Meda and pretty much every character in this book. Every freaking character was amazing, no one was cast aside just so the main character can have the lime light, everyone get to have their own moment.

This is the story of Meda who eats people soul to survive. That is her nature. The fact the she eats souls for a living, and that she's strong for an average human she knows she's only half human, or so she believes, but the other half is unknown, which she desperately want to know. You see, its not like you meet someone like you who enjoys munching on a human soul.

Meda is strong, arrogant, confident and special (That was what her mom always tell her), that until she met the people on black suit turns out she's only mom-special. It was too late when she realized that those people are like her, strong and unhuman. Shit happened and those men handed her sorry ass back to her painfully. She was saved then by a boy who turned out to be a Crusaders. They were a group of people who are dedicated on saving good people who will have a special impact to the world, or shortly known as Beacons. Unaware of her own nature and curiosity drives her into playing like a good guy and joining the Crusades.

Things happened so fast, she appeared to be someone who is wanted by the whole demon community. Good thing the Crusaders where a group of people who will never ever turn her over for their own safety.

There are a lot of action and hilarious scene from Meda's point of view that will make you giggle. And believe me there are a lot of those.

"I let a tear trickle over.
He hurries to reassure me. "Don't cry-I'll protect you."
Humiliating. Absolutely humiliating."

Characters.Meda's not the typical heroine who always whine when some people volunteer to be sacrificed. That was one of the things I really really liked about Meda. It's really tiring when a character gets all just-sacrifice-me-I-don't-want-anyone-get-hurt-because-of-me, while that is heroic, I don't think that would have fit Meda's character. She's half demon anyway. In fact, she doesn't think anyone else aside from herself.

"You don't have to run faster than the bear, just faster than other pople you're running with. I cast a look at jo - seems to be having a cripple along could be advantageous "

description

She grew up with the company of her mother alone. She was home schooled so she didn't have any friends at all. She doesn't know compassion, however, there were times she did care, she just didn't realize it right away.

"Suddenly I'm glad they came with me, even Uri, because it means I know they're alive. "

description

Jo's relationship with Meda is Hate-sarcasm-hate. She didn't trust Meda, she knows that there something she's hiding from her. She's tough and kick ass just like Meda, so they get to clash most of the time. She's also, cripple so she kind of have the tendency to have a self-pity-party. People always think she's weak, but Meda never thought of her as weak, if anything it would be the opposite.

"I've seen her fight and she's pretty good even with her leg. Part-girl, part-machine-all ninja"

And that, my friend is when good friendship start.

Romance. While I don't mind reading a romance in some part of the books I read, there was nothing like that for our evil Meda. I can see some potential love interest, but the fact that he was in a jail and her life kind of suck, made it difficult to elaborate. Meda thinks so too.

"He's good-looking in a bad-boy kind of way - downright hot, really, not that I'm in a position to care. Impending death has a way of focusing your priorities"

Very well said Meda. Way to go! Jo and Chi on the other hand just got lucky! and I am not saying anything.

Overall, this was a very good read. It was action packed and unique in someway. Everyone who like a fantasy, paranormal with kick ass heroine themed book will surely loved this. I actually felt sad that I only just discovered this book now, on the brighter side though, I didn't have to wait for a year for the sequel to come out. At least I was spare with the agonizing waiting.
