I finished My Thoughts Exactly by Lily Allen a couple of days ago! I always liked Lily Allen not just because of her music but also because of what she represents. She always looked honest and authentic and very different from other pop singers. And My Thoughts Exactly just proved I was right to think that. I am truly glad I bought this book at a London airport, a few months ago, just before boarding.
This is one of most honest, straightforward and transparent memoirs I ever read in my life. It was inspiring because Allen shares how she got into music and what it’s like to create, to grow as an artist and to deal with being a celebrity as a young woman. Above all, she wrote about her traumas like her difficult childhood, her stalker, the loss of a baby and the constant bullying from the media. One of the things that I loved the most about this memoir is how aware she is of her own flaws and struggles. There’s also a bit of gossip here and there, of course! Obviously, by describing her work, some parties or some of her relationships, she ends up mentioning famous people.
My Thoughts Exactly is such a compulsive read! You just can’t stop! I highly recommend it if you’re into memoirs of female artists!

The most honest celebrity memoir I’ve read in a long time. She didn’t shy away from sharing the raw truth of some of the awful things she’s experienced.
There are a few things that will stay with me from this book - the upsetting story of her stillbirth, her terrifying stalker experience (and how the police mishandled things), and the sexual assault she faced at the hands of a record company executive.
She was respectful when talking about others, and I liked that she acknowledged multiple times throughout the book that these stories only told her side of things, and there was another side to every story.
She is also endearingly self aware, and freely admits to acting like a dick in certain situations. She doesn’t paint herself as a saint or a martyr.
Would highly recommend.

I enjoyed listening to this book as it made it feel more like listening to a friend than reading about a pop star. Lily’s had a hard time with fame and I feel for her but I’m not sure if I would have finished the book if I had been reading it physically.

*2.5* an extra 0.5 for the important ground covered re: misogyny, assault and male domination in the music industry. Still not sure how I feel about the book as a whole, I need some time to reflect before reviewing properly.

Her own stories were really interesting and often devastating. I found her more broad commentary on the topics she was exploring less intriguing.
