I loved the Xenogenesis trilogy and I really wanted to like this book, but could not get into it. I think after xenogensis and also reading Blood Child I was a disappointed by the lack of weirdness here. The plot involves dystopian regression to anarchy, reversal of progress against racism, untrustworthy police, and a drug epidemic. I guess in the 90s this seemed edgy, but in actual 2024 (the book begins in fictional 2024), it is just a little too on the nose and unshocking. I love the main character and I also liked it he development of this pseudoreligion. It was cool to see what would happen when a religion develops organically and without being forced on people or an oppressive force in their lives.
Young adult dystopian future sci-fi. Would be great if I was a teenager.
